I agree. All 1080p content works great. Just 4K is the issue when it comes to audio sync alongside Plex’s inability to play Dolby vision (which is another issue that’s over a year old).
If you are also having audio sync issues with infuse your issue isn’t the same as mentioned in this thread.
If you go back to the start of this thread, you’ll see people reporting the issue with different content, including 4K and 1080p, but only with the enhanced player, and we reproduced this in our own testing as well. As Ridley mentioned, people do experience this differently on different hardware, and in our own comparisons between different players, they’re no more consistent than our own player. So, some people may only see this on some content, and others may see it on all content.
As already mentioned, we have a change that is currently in internal testing that may improve this for some users, but still requires some additional work before it’s released.
In my case, the sync issue happens also with no 4K content, in both AppleTVs 4k I own.
I have this issue with the classic player, the new player, all of it. Turning off match content and frame rate helps but it’s not perfect. I think the only thing that solves it is turning on game mode. This is so frustrating. It’s ONLY an issue with plex.
We don’t have any control over the old player (Apple’s AVPlayer), I’m afraid, so if that is out of sync, there isn’t much we can do about that. We can only control our own player (based on mpv), and how that syncs.
I’ve been dealing with this for months and if you look into it, this has been an issue for well over 3 YEARS now with zero response or help from Plex! Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player
Now that it’s affecting more people, they’re finally looking into it.
Since it’s been broken for so long I started using Infuse & its been great. It syncs with my Plex server & plays everything flawlessly unlike the Plex apps.
Give Infuse a try, we’ll probably be waiting ages for Plex to fix their app.
I only recently switched back to the AppleTV (after being on Sheild and Roku in recent years) having been enticed by the new Discover feature. The deep-linking only available on AppleTV makes the Discover feature in Plex brilliant.
Sadly though, after forking out for an expensive AppleTV 4K 128MB (3rd Gen) I am now plagued with this lip-sync issue!! ![]()
My set up is:
Config A) Apple TV > Soundbar > TV via ARC (not eARC)
One of the suggestions above “sort-of” fixes the issue by changing this to:
Config B) Apple TV > TV > Soundbar via ARC
While I don’t seem to have lipsync issues config B I sadly Ioose surround channel as my TV’s ARC can only handle 2 channels.
I have no reverted to config A and I am using Infuse Pro (as mentioned above) connect to Plex and for now happily no more lip sync issues while still maintaining surround channels.
Sadly though this means I miss out on the Discover feature which is the whole reason I bought the new Apple TV. ![]()
Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed an will watch this thread in the hope a future Plex release will fix this issue.
This problem is similar to the one I’ve been having on Xbox One for years, almost always with 1080p recordings made in .ts format using Plex DVR and an HDHomeRun Connect tuner. It’s not with every recording, and affected recordings are fine on Windows and Android. Is the Xbox using a player module that is similarly out of your control? Are the fixes you’re testing likely to fix the Xbox problem as well as the Apple one?
Xbox and Apple are totally unrelated. And yes, the player on the Xbox is similarly limited in what we can do with it, same as Apple’s AV Player.
So is a fix unlikely on the Xbox One?
I didn’t say that, but it’s totally unrelated to this thread or work.
FYI updated to Plex 8.1.4 Beta for Apple TV and the audio sync issue still persists. Sigh ![]()
In the 8.14 beta, there are some potential improvements for the audio/video sync that are currently “flagged-off”, which I can enable for people to test and report back if they’d like to try it out. If you want to try it, DM me your Plex username, and I’ll enable it for you. It will require killing and restarting the app after I enable it, but once it’s done, you should see some improvements.
I decided to setup Plex server (finally) and just ran smack into the audio sync issue on all my Apple TVs in the house. It’s so frustrating! Infuse works without issue as others have said but I don’t want to use Infuse I want to use Plex. Really hoping this can get fixed soon.
For reference I have 2 4K Apple TVs and 1 1080p Apple TV all hooked up to Yamaha receivers of various models. And they all have the issue.
I’m getting so fed up with this! While previously only HEVC/4K content was affected, just yesterday I had a ~500-1000ms audio delay on a H264/1080p/EAC3-Atmos file. Soon enough I won’t be able to play anything on Plex on my TV without an audio delay!
It’s so frustrating, especially when VLC and Infuse play these with no probs on ATV. Hell, even Plex on a 3 years old iPad or iPhone plays everything without any lag!
I simply don’t understand how this can be present in the app for so long. And cry a little every time somebody mentions “Infuse as a solution” — after 2+ years with Infuse, let me tell you, it’s got its own major problems, so no thanks. Please fix Plex ATV, finally, please. How can I help
We do have some potential improvements, as I mentioned in my post above. However, if you’re seeing 500ms-1000ms delays, that’s far beyond what our app would be doing, and there might be a delay somewhere else in your chain.
What problems are you seeing with Infuse? It connects to my plex server and plays everything I throw at it.
Lucky you!
Take a look at the Infuse Support forum, Video Playback section and you’ll see the grass is not greener, quite the contrary.
Anyway, this is Plex forum…
The only important thing about Infuse for this discussion is that if Infuse and VLC can play the exact same files on the exact same Apple TV and setup without issue then it proves it’s possible for the Plex app to do the same. That’s the frustration.
