Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

This issue persists for me and it is very frustrating. I am generally sympathetic to Plex on fixing issues, but this is just unacceptable. Whatever the issue is, be it licensing fees, a technical challenge that they struggle with (this seems unlikely), or something else, we deserve an explanation. Look I get that some of the more uncommon streaming formats could present issues, but working 5.1 audio shouldn’t be a problem. I paid for Plex to stream video (aka the core business!) and it cannot do it correctly for an uncomplicated for videos with 5.1 EAC-3! This thread has hundreds of users offering logs and commenting the issue has existed for months. Either fix it or do not offer an app on Apple TV!

Are all of these “changes” being made/tested still behind a test flag we need to request be enabled? And if so, how do we request it?

Thanks!

They are, but we’re not currently accepting any new testers, I’m afraid.

I’m glad to hear this because mine is still having the sync issue. I would have been bummed to hear the fixes were already implemented in the regular updates.

Thanks for the quick response, @DaveBinM! There is hope!

Still have audio sync issues on Plex on my Apple TV 4K 2017 with 4K HDR movies since a couple month now…
Infuse works perfectly.

Does 8.17 beta address the audio sync issue?

I have also had on and off issues with audio being out of sync on my Apple TV 4K.

The only way I could get it to be watchable was to set the audio output settings of the ATV to 5.1 rather than auto ( Atmos) mode. The sound quality improved and the sync issues were greatly improved.

This isn’t an issue for me as I don’t have a system that utilises or supports Atmos anyway.

Whenever I do have audio sync issues now its very slight and watchable but obviously not ideal.

I turn on both frame rate and dynamic range matching in the settings.

When I had audio output set to auto I had to turn off frame rate matching to get anywhere close to being in sync.

I have a Denon X3300W AV receiver, Apple TV 4K (2021), Sony x900h.

I have also noticed that infuse plays DV files more consistently but haven’t wanted to pay for another app when I already paid Plex for a lifetime pass…

No it does not.

3 plus years and counting…

I love my AppleTV 4k (2022) player. Love the interface, love how quick it is to open and start playing things. But it just doesn’t work well with Plex when I hook up my system in the recommended way (Device → Soundbar → TV).

So I gave up tried a new FireTV Cube 3rd gen and all my problems went away. Streaming uncompressed 4k rips from my NAS look perfect and the FireTV does passthrough of the TrueHD Atmos stream which the soundbar happily converts. No audio sync issues, no video stutter. I HATE the advertising on the FireTV but for actually watching things it works better.

With that said if I route the Apple TV to the TV then TV to Soundbar and fiddle with settings, like others in this thread, it works fine. But I lose a lot on the audio side. So my shiny AppleTV will be put in the basement on my old TV that doesn’t have a soundbar and will stay there until these audio issues are fixed. Or maybe forever since the FireTV does TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X passthrough which Apple doesn’t support.

I want to buy a new Apple TV but reading these issues with Plex keeps me from buying. Will this be fixed in the next few weeks? Or do we recommend everyone with an Apple TV to move to a different player instead?

Imo it’s the best media player/streamer out there. Just get the infuse app. Plex ain’t fixing this issue anytime soon. It’s been over 3 years already.

Audio sync is the one of the issues Plex has. Proper high end audio and video support is another which won’t be happening anytime soon either.

The fact that this issue has persisted as long as it has leads me to believe that we are dealing with a certain dev personality type that I have seen over the years in the dev world…

These rigid dev types tend to be ‘absolutely sure’ that the issues at hand can’t possibly be ‘X’, so they refuse to look at ‘X’ as the issue. This attitude usually comes from incorrect assumptions.

As long as that is the case, this issue will probably persist for another three years.

Frustrating.

i think its more they care to pour more resources into their streaming crap then their core user base at this point. basically they are now bigger then their core “nerd/enthusiast” user base which got them where they are today and got them many more users to join the service and are now focused on the mainstream user, which is sad…

That too. 100% agree.

I don’t get the stance Plex is taking here.

It’s clear there is a widespread issue that has been ongoing for years. It’s clear that issue is only when playing media thought the Plex app. But time after time a Plex admin just chimes in saying ‘it’s out if their control’, when it’s literally only their app doing it.

When are they going to step up an own this?

No. I already paid. Plex has an obligation to get their software to work.

Keep checking this thread hoping to see good news. Nope.

Definitely some serious blinkers somewhere at Plex HQ over this.

But then, where is spatial audio or eAC3 Atmos support? Two other reasons to just pony up the money for a year of Infuse as Plex aren’t interested in the Apple TV.

The problem I had with infuse was that it didn’t play Dolby Vision correctly. Audio was great, but it played Dolby Vision as HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision.

I think Infuse even played the Atmos audio stream as opposed to transcoding it. Oh, and Infuse direct plays AV1 files, unlike Plex, on Apple TV.
