latest update brings proper support for profile 8, infuse has been perfect with all my profile 1 and 5 rips, and now proper 8 support its playing literally every DV file i throw at it.
it will as long as its not lossless/trueHD as apple tv itself doesnt support atmos over lossless.
I can assure you thatâs not the case.
If your Dolby Vision file is Profile 5 (and most Profile 8) Infuse will play back as âtrueâ Dolby Vision.
If itâs Profile 7 itâs impossible to get Dolby Vision in Plex or Infuse.
Bottom line is Profile 7 and most Profile 8 in Plex are just forcing the Apple TV into Dolby Vision mode but you are NOT seeing any Dolby Vision metadata. (Itâs called âfakeâ DV)
Infuse will try and respect what the file is capable of.
(As it should do)
Plex will just simply play fake DV in everything but Profile 5.
Please donât be fooled into thinking that seeing that Dolby Vision logo pop up on your TV means you are getting more Dolby Vision in Plex than in Infuse. Itâs the exact opposite.
I did some more research on this and discovered that my file is profile 7 and read about Plex doing fake DV. However, Plex forcing the TV to stay in DV mode even if itâs not actually giving it the DV metadata does make the video look better when compared to Infuse playing it truly in HDR mode. Might not be the case for everyone, but it is for this particular file on my particular TV.
Side note, I really wish their was a way to keep proper DV metadata when encoding files with Handbrake.
P.S. Sorry for the side tangent to the true purpose of this thread, which is the Plex/Apple TV audio sync issues.
After subscribing to replies in this thread for the last month and hoping for the best, I finally downloaded Infuse. Wow. Itâs insane that this 3rd party app is able to do what Plexâs should be able to do but a million times better. The best I could get with Plex was having match range on but match frame rate off. That slightly improved the audio delay but I found HDR content to basically stutter and nothing looked smooth.
Downloaded infuse, paid 10 bucks for the whole year with a 1 month trial, and bam. Instantly all of my 4k/HDR content plays exactly as it should with absolutely no issues. As a newer user who was immediately hooked on Plex, this experience without a doubt tainted my view on them. The total lack of regular communication about this massive issue is beyond disappointing. Canât say Iâll be raving about them to friends much anymore. In fact, I realized with Sonarr/Radarr and switching over to Infuse, Iâll never have to open Plex unless I need to change a setting.
pretty much. I picked up an ATV 4k 2022 for the thread border router functionality, better UI experience, and apple fitness. My 2017 Shield was getting long in the tooth and I was tired of the sluggish UI and memory leaks I was dealing with. Extremely disappointed at how long this issue has been going on, and the audio desync is noticeable immediately. I bought the lifetime Infuse (happy to support an active dev and good product) and itâs been stellar. Actually, a compelling reason to use Infuse even more so today than a month ago is they added DolbyVision Profile 8 support (they do realtime metadata shenanigans to convert profile 8.1 â profile 5 that the ATV can playback). It was such a pleasant surprise that I wasnât expecting to have when I initially bought the ATV.
Plex apparently has made some progress on the audio sync issue, and though itâs obviously related to some tvOS quirk with the player they use, its been far too long without all hands on deck to fix a core competency functionality. Itâs embarrassing, but us complaining / beating a dead horse isnât going to motivate them to actually fix it, despite all the apparent efforts. Iâm surprised at how long the âbeta, back end togglesâ have been invite-only and not rolled out even in a limited capacity by now too. Itâs been like 3 plex app version releases since then.
My only grievance with Infuse is the UI is a bit lackluster and limited, I do prefer Plexâs UI. However the playback is so much better in Infuse.
When will this get fixed.? the out of sync audio is super annoying. it seems they dont know what they are doing @ plex or what the problem is it take ages.
Having this issue for agesâŠnot a fan of it. Does anyone know - is this a specific issue for Apple TV? Asking because I am looking at maybe buying an nVidia Shield and swapping out the ATV. But I donât want to drop $160+ on a different player if itâs the same results on the other side of that purchase.
Vanilla icecream is also fine. But Plex on Apple TV is not. You probably mean the best but comments like these are annoying⊠We donât use Shield, and we donât want to. We already have a Plex lifetime pass. Is it too much to ask for to fix issues on (probably) the most popular device?
Iâm not discounting this at all, but the previous poster (johnblaze00) answered my question. I would LOVE to just use the ATV and be done with it. But the fact remains that I want a good experience and the ATV in the equation isnât cutting it (for what sounds like multiple years). Iâm in a position that I could possibly just spray a little $$$ at it and buy a Shield, but wanted to verify if that was even an option, which he said it was.
So itâs not a great solution for the AppleTV issue by any stretch and I get where youâre coming from, but I just want my home theater/movies to work as expected.
Again, my issue is that when I plunked down the money for a Plex lifetime pass, this all WORKED. Apple TV played my content (4K and non-4K, movies, TV shows, everything) just fine.
Then something changed, and now Plex DOESNâT play my content without the audio delay.
Itâs got to be super frustrating for Plex to try and figure out, as it doesnât seem to be the same date for everyone as far as when Apple TV stopped playing content properly.
But Iâll also say this again-Infuse plays 4K content just fine on Apple TV, so itâs not an impossible issue to solve. Get it done! You took my money for the Plex pass when everything worked; now either fix the issue so it all works again or give me my money back.
Does it play DV and Atmos? Funnily enough I was looking at Jellyfin and Swiftfin myself earlier today. Between a rock and a hard place with Plex & Infuse! One has a decent player and pants UI and the other a nice UI but boy does the player still suck.
Dv no. Best bet is still infuse for proper support for Apple TV.
Atmos and lossless audio? Yes it was. It was playing my dual profile rip of avatar in hdr10 with the atmos track without an issue. Same rip works in DV in infuse.
Still better then the native Plex player. The Dolby vision thread here is almost as old as this one.
I just donât see the point of using an app that I supported with money but wonât support its user base back. The Jellyfin community and devs are very active.
I just gave it a whirl⊠itâs not a viable replacement for me!
@elan I realise you are a busy fella, but last time this stuff was raised with you some progress was made. We have 3 main issues with Plex on the Apple TV currently. I know we keep banging on about Infuse, and we keep being told that there are licensing issues which is why Infuse can play things that Plex doesnât currently. Is that it, the end of the road for the Dolby formats on the ATV or are we ever going to see Dolby Atmos / Proper DV and the lip sync issues fixed? Itâs been going on for years and folks try to be patient. Infuse player is exceptional and plays pretty much whatever you throw at it, but the interface⊠ughâŠ
If you could get playback parity with Infuse along with the Plex user interface, then folks would come back in droves. I donât wanna use Infuse, I want to use Plex!
I know we keep being told that playback is being worked on, but thatâs been said for over 18 months now and we donât know exactly what is being worked on or what the end goal is - we could be hanging on hoping for stuff that Plex has concluded will not be happening.
Infuse issues get fixed within days usually, Plex is like getting blood out of a stone!
