Apple TV 4K : Play 2160p movies on a 1080p TV / Projector ? Transcode done by PMS or Apple TV4K ?!

Hello to all.
I m using an good old Apple TV 4 (not 4K) at the moment and was about to upgrade some of my movies from 1080p to 2160p.
I use a videoprojector 1080p but wish to upgrade to a 2160p one in the forthcoming months.
The problem is that my Synology 918+ tries to downscale / transcode the movies to play it on the apple TV . And it freezes a lot.
I was wondering if just begin to upgrade to Apple TV 4K (and still use my projector 1080p), the downscale needed to play on my 1080p projector would be still done by the PMS or then does by the Apple TV4K ?
Does anyone know / experience it ? If so i could start upgrading my library

Many thanks !!

Yes the Apple TV 4K will downscale and tonemap the video locally. I just tested setting my tv to 1080p sdr, turned off match content and put a 4k HDR remux movie. Apple TV 4K direct play the video and downscales it to 1080p sdr, colors are fine as well. Audio (true hd) still needs transcoding
