So i just replaced my Nvidia Shield TV with the new apple tv 4k…
Before i was using kodi to play my 4K HDR… But now i dont have that option and have to use plex…
Problem is at its says my server is not fast enough to transcode this movie, even tho i set the quality to “original”
I know that 4K HDR are demanding alot on my network but had no issus with Kodi
My Apple tv is ofcause connected to LAN and my server should not be the problem (Xeon Processer + 256GB RAM)
I set all settings on plex server to original quality and also on apple tv box…
Anything else i can try?
I’m having the same issue with the new Apple TV 4K. The Apple TV 4K is using the same profile for the older Apple TV that doesn’t support x265 or 4K videos. Since it’s using the older profile it’s transcoding. I also have a Nvidia Shield TV, Roku 4 and Sony A1E (Android TV). All three of them “direct play” x265 and 4K videos without an issue. The Sony tv buffers a little on 4k files but I believe it’s due to the TV’s processing power.
Looking at other posts, there needs to be a different profile for the Apple TV 4K. Similar to the Roku’s and Sony TV’s. They have separate profiles for their different devices.

This issue is being worked on by the Plex Dev team. Here is their response from https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1522599/#Comment_1522599

This one is on our radar.
The reason this is slightly tricky is because Apple changed HTTP Live Streaming formats for HEVC (H.265). In order to Direct Stream any HEVC content, Plex Media Server needs to change from using MPEG-TS to fragmented MP4 streaming.
By changing profiles, it’s possible to support Direct Play of HEVC in MP4 files (only). To support it fully, you’ll need to wait for an upcoming update to Plex Media Server.
