Apple TV 7.2 (15857, 15875) - please revert the subtitles fix from 7.1.1 (15801)

Hi,

After almost 10 years from my first report for fixing the Hebrew subtitles issue (can read it here), in the Beta version 7.1.1 (15801), some how that fix disappeared in version 7.2 (15857, 15875).

How can i open an issue to the developers for that?
I’m trying to raise this issue for almost 10 years, and now after they fixed that it disappeared, It’s already been fixed, so why it been removed?
It’s frustrating to report bugs in here when i dont get any response from the developers, or having the right place to report it.

Here are the logs with both versions:
com.plexapp.plex 7.1.1 (15801).log (464.4 KB)
com.plexapp.plex 7.2 (15857).log (669.1 KB)

Please help with that…

Thanks,
Idan

I have no idea what happened there. I’ll investigate tomorrow, sorry about that!

Can you share with me subtitles that can repro this issue?

Also from what I see there haven’t been changes in the video player in a while. Are you sure 7.1.1 is the first version that fixed the issue?

There was a problem, though, with Thai subtitles that was fixed in 7.2, and maybe that fix is what broke Hebrew subtitles.

@sergiou87
Thank you for your response!

  1. Here is an example subtitle (the issue will appear when there is a question mark or other special characters at the end of row)
    Hebrew subtitles.zip (139.1 KB)
  2. I checked now, and appearnatlly this was fixed in earlier versions (the earlier version i could check is 2.17 15061)
I didn’t noticed it because i used other app because of that issue, so now i’m using 7.1.1 till it will fixed again.
  3. Yes i saw that in the version changes, i think also that was the problem, i saw in the logs that in the earlier versions there was a Hebrew fonts that it been using, and in the last version it doesn’t use that fonts anymore.

Thank you for all the help!

Hah! That’s all very useful info, thank you very much!

Due to an overlook, a specific tool called harfbuzz was removed from the enhanced video player some time ago. That tool is used to render certain subtitles properly. That’s what broke Thai subtitles and sounds like it fixed the bug with Hebrew subtitles that you reported.

So maybe the problem is in that harfbuzz tool which is causing problems with Hebrew subtitles. We’ll look into that. Thank you also for the subtitle file

@Idan_Bush I just tested it with the subtitles you shared and it works perfectly in 7.2 both in Apple TV and iPhone/iPad. Check this:

That looks correct, right? That’s the version from the Apple Store for iPhone.

@sergiou87
No i still see the issue on 7.2, in both iPhone and Apple TV

here is a screenshot from my iPhone:
As you can see from the example below the question mark (?) appear to be “bigger than” symbol (>)

here is a screenshot from my Apple TV:
As you can see from the example below the question mark (?) appear to be “colon” symbol (

@sergiou87
This happening only for specific symbols like “?”, “-”, “;”…
And i think only at the end of row of each subtitle

It seems to happen only when the symbol is not in the first line

Super weird, I’ll investigate now that I can reproduce it.
Thanks!

Thank you very much!

Hi @sergiou87
do have any updates? can it be fixed?

No updates yet. We think it can be fixed, but we still haven’t found the exact cause of the problem, sorry! :confounded:

OK thank you.

Hi @sergiou87
Is there any updates? The 7.1.1 beta version is almost expire and I’ll not be able to use it anymore.
I’ll appreciate it if it can be resolved soon…

Thanks,
Idan

Nothing yet, sorry :frowning: With summer everything is a bit slower  We still have to find where is the bug exactly.

@sergiou87 Why not to check with the tool harfbuzz and bring it back with a fix to the Thai subtitles?
Or use that tool only for the Hebrew subtitles?

Yes, that is what we want to do. Well, the problem is actually the opposite: the bug in harfbuzz happens with hebrew subtitles. Thai subtitles were broken because harfbuzz wasn’t included.

But before we report (or even fix) it there, we need to dig into what the actual problem is. We’re 99% sure the problem is in harfbuzz but not 100%

That said, unless I’m missing something, I don’t think we can disable harfbuzz in mpv for certain subtitles  It’s an all or nothing kind of thing.

Hi @sergiou87
Just checking if there are any updates?

It took 10 years to fix the issue with the Hebrew subtitles, but broke after few months.

Thanks,
Idan

Same here. I’m forced to use another client (Infuse) to be able to watch with Hebrew subtitles properly. This is really such a basic functionality of many other video players, that it just seems strange Plex can’t seem to support it natively.
Please fix this issue that has been discussed in these forums for so many years.

yeah same thing for me also, i really like Plex app interface but a lack of proper Hebrew subtitles support is a deal breaker for me also. i am using infuse for now that has a much better support for subtitles (and not only for Hebrew but more customizable options).
