Apple TV can't find Plex server

I have been running Plex server on an iMac for over 2 years and since last year have been using Apple TV 4. For the last week to 10 days it fails to find the Plex server. I can sign in using the Plex link but it fails to find the server on the network. Plex still works fine via my mobile, tablet and smart TV app.

Has there been an upgrade or something to the Apple TV app? I haven’t changed anything within my environment. I have checked that the firewall on the iMac is not enabled.

Can you help please?

I’m having the exact same problem. Apple TV 4 cannot detect OS X Plex server at all. Works fine on my iPhone and iPad.

Ok, so I created a new Plex Media Server on a different machine. I can connect to that server and play on other mobile devices including the smartyTV app but the Apple TV 4 won’t connect to the new media server EITHER. So the problem seems to be the Plex app running on Apple TV 4. Did this get a recent upgrade that is preventing it to connect?

Can someone from Plex Support please help?

I am having the same issue. Apple TV cannot find or connect to my plex server. Same issue on VLC using my Plex Server. Very frustrating! Can anyone help?

I do not have my Plex server running on a Mac OS (Windows 10 system), but I’ve run into the problem where Apple TV could not connect or could not find any Plex server on my network. It suggests that I check firewall and make sure that my Plex server is up and running.

My resolution was:

  1. Removing “Devices” from the Plex server (Settings-> Server-> Devices). I had previously created and used two older Plex server names (migrated folder directory location, changed hard drives, etc) that were never removed from this list. I deleted the two names and left only the latest Plex server name on the list.
  2. From the Apple TV, I went ahead and deleted the Plex server app completely. Just press and hold down on the Plex server app with the remote touchpad then press the >|| button to confirm and delete.
  3. Go to the App Store and search for Plex, download it from the cloud.
  4. Link the app to your account again.

Finally it showed my existing Plex server name on the network. I just selected it and immediately had access to all synchronized media again. Hope this helps.

Same issue here, the steps above, doesn’t work. Roku works perfectly from the Mac server, so it looks like there’s a problem with the Apple 4.

I do agree that there seems to be an issue with AppleTV 4. This shouldn’t happen in the first place.

On Siri remote hold down the Home and “volume down” buttons together. Plex app was closed and on next start local Plex server connected

Few minutes ago i faced the same problem… I few months ago i bought a ATV4K and installed plex and it worked out of the box… meantime i got a new internet carrier, changed TV carrier and so on and ran into above described problems…

  • deleted plex app and reinstalled it…
    was again asked for auth. but after the second auth it worked and still does ^^
