I noticed today that audio seemed to sound worse in the Plex app, upon further inspection found that Plex is down-mixing the 5.1 audio to stereo. It’s weird because my receiver says it’s getting a 5.1 signal from Plex but nothing is coming from the center speaker. I have my receiver set to up-mix, so even if it’s getting a stereo signal it will try to create a center channel, but it wasn’t doing that. On the other hand, if I played something in stereo on Plex my receiver would up-mix it and the center channel worked. I tested on a second Apple TV hooked up to a 3.0 sound bar and it was doing the same thing.
Anyway, toggled to the “old video player” and 5.1 was working again, then toggled back to the new video player and audio seemed to be working fine again. But this solution only lasts temporarily and problem restarts if app is restarted. This only seems to affect the new video player.
I suspect this is related to the tvOS 16 update released today because that’s when the problem started. No other app is doing this, if I use Infuse the sound is fine.
I updated to 8.8.1 and now it seems the center and right channel are flipped. Dialogue is coming out the R speaker and the center is sending out effects.
It is not fixed in 8.8.2 even though that is the stated purpose of the release. All my movies still have audio mix problems. Dialog seems to be funneled to front right speaker and surround channels going to left front - no sound from the rear. Old video player works (as others have already stated). I hope there is another release coming soon and the devs haven’t closed the book on this one.
