Plex on Apple TV 4K (tvOS 16) won’t play 5.1 surround

Server Version#:1.28.1.6104
Player Version#: 8.7 (3452)

Just updated Apple TV to tvOs 16 beta. When trying to play movies with 5.1 atmos surround sound, I’m only getting the front 3 channels. Surround sound system will play movies with 2 channel stereo through all 5 speakers via Plex just fine. Can also stream 5.1 surround through streaming services like Netflix with no problem. So it’s not a receiver or Apple TV issue.

Can’t revert Apple TV Os because it’s a 4K Apple TV.

Hoping Plex has an update with the new tvOS releasing soon.

Already acknowledged and we just need to wait a while

Thank you! Didn’t see this thread come up when I searched for the issue.

Since tvOS 16 has no sound with the current Plex. player, I tried InFuse and it’s also no sound. MrMC on the other hand works fine.

Just fixed the sound problem by setting the Apple TV audio to stereo. I have a simple stereo receiver set up so not playing 5.1 does not bother me.

Surround speakers in Infuse is working absolutely fine here on tvOS16

I think I figure out what my problem is which is due to my audio setup not passing along 5.1 signal. I have the AppleTV HDMI out to a Samsung TV then from the TV optical out to a box that converts the optical signal to stereo analog audio to my old fashion stereo amp. So, it must be that the Plex and Infuse both try to play 5.1 which resulted in my stereo converter box not able. to translate that. Maybe MrMC just played straight stereo to start with so no problem there. Of course, this is resolved when I set the Apple TV to just stereo audio thus resolving the problem for all the different players.

Fair enough.
But for those of us who do have surround speakers it’s still an issue in Plex but not Infuse.
