I took the plunge and bought a HD HomeRun Connect. I was so stoked to start watching live TV through the Apple TV connected to my 50" plasma…but the stream quits ALL THE TIME. I can’t get through more than about three minutes of streaming before it just quits out and goes back (without an error) to the guide. Often it’s less than three minutes!
It’ll run far more reliably on my iPad - as a test I streamed for over an hour, so I don’t know if there’s some setting causing my troubles or if the Apple TV app is just half baked.
The tuner wasn’t cheap, so if it’s not going to work, I’d like to return the thing. Figured I’d check here first, because what I MOST want is live TV to work.
hi, if the stream does not stop on a separate device (like iPad or iPhone), I can only say that your tuner seems to be okay. Try the same channel on multiple devices.
You can tinker with transcoding settings in the extended setup, somewhere you can set the transcoder to fast. Maybe that helps.
Can you watch movies (recordings) on the AppleTV? I could also be the network settings … What I am not sure about (yet), is if the liveTV stream is encoded the same way as a recoding or has some different properties.
Potential weak spots (to check) are your network towards appleTV, the cpu-power of your transcoding device (where your PMS runs on).
Since you say that the Live TV streamed for over an hour on your iPad I would say that the tuner and your Plex Media Server are working fine. I would look at the settings for video stream in the Plex app on your Apple TV. I don’t have an Apple TV 4 so can’t really look at the settings myself. Hopefully someone that is using an Apple TV 4 for streaming Live TV will see the post. Did you search the forum for other threads dealing with ATV4?
I have exactly the same problem. Live TV is constantly crashing the transcoder when playing on my Apple TV, however seems to be fine via Plex Web and the iOS apps. Oddly, transcoding/streaming is fine across all devices for movies and TV Shows (that aren’t played via Live TV/DVR feature).
I’m based in the UK, and i’ve noticed a number of posts on here complaining about the Live TV/DVR feature and it’s compatibility here in the UK - so i’ve just put this particular issue down to that.
To be honest, i’m just using the ‘Channels’ app (https://getchannels.com/) on my Apple TV. It’s a little expensive, but is hands down better than Plex for Live TV. It has a propper EPG layout and is very reliable. It’s just a huge shame that Plex’s Live TV is so far from this.
Yes, movies and TV shows work great. I’ve had some version of Plex going for probably about six years without issue, and was first in line for an Apple TV 4 as soon as I heard Plex was going to have an app for it.
Ashley - I’ve been debating spending that $25 for Channels app. If you’ve been using it reliably for a while, I might just go that route until Plex for TVos matures a bit. I don’t suppose there’s something similar for Roku??
I’ve been using the TVOS 11 Beta and plex live. I’ve watched the entire ND football game without a hiccup (4 hours). The only issue I have is that if I go back and fourth between channels several times in a minute, eventually the tuner must lock me out of one of the tuners for a few minutes and I can’t go back to one of the channels. After a few minutes I can watch that channel again. I’m using the tablo dual usb tuner which is the same as the WinTV dual usb.
