Server Version#: 1.13.8.5395
Player Version#: Apple TV 8.45
I recently installed PLEX on my Apple TV and I am unable to see any content from my local server.
I admit my local server is an old version but unfortunately, I can’t / have the time to update the entire OS/Application stack.
My samsung TV also has an old version of the PLEX app and it’s working great, so it’s definitely a change in the new player app.
I browsed through the settings to see if i could get it to work, but nothing seemed available. I saw some older posts about allowing insecure connections, but I don’t even see that option.
My server is configured for local access only (Remote Access disabled). Plex Server is running on an old FreeNAS (version listed above).
The player is Apple TV latest at the time of writing this, but I’m happy to provide additional details if helpful.
Is there any way to stream the content from my server onto modern players or is that simply not possible anymore?
There’ve been certain features/updates over the years for which client and server version dependencies were created. Version 7.4 (from 2022) of the Apple TV client, for example, was the last to support server versions earlier than 1.15.2:
The same is true for other clients. The server version you’re using is nearly 7 years old and hundreds of versions out-of-date. It is neither viable as a server for modern clients nor is it any longer secure (there have been several vulnerabilities addressed in the intervening years).
Thanks, I appreciate the response. I do wish disabling external access would allow further backwards compatibility. In my current setup Plex is fairly useless with the exception of 1 tv for which i disabled automatic app updates, so it can still use the plex server.
the FreeNAS update (which I intend to do at some point) is a bigger one that I am willing to tackle in the near future. Would a Synology or QNAS solution be recommended or do you think going to a windows o/s would be the easiest path here?
Given that you’re starting from FreeNAS, the path of least resistance might be to upgrade to TrueNAS CORE (which is still FreeBSD-based) and then migrate to TrueNAS SCALE (which is Linux-based). The latter migration is documented:
There might be some interim upgrades in there to get you from whatever FreeNAS version you’re on now to the latest TrueNAS CORE.
Or you could just get a cheap Intel-based (think N100/150 processor) system and run Plex Media Server on it via Windows or Linux, just using your FreeNAS server for storage.
yeah, the upgrade to the latest TrueNAS will be a long bumpy road I think. The reality is that my botherboard (ASRock C2750) was injured in a lightning strike that came through my LAN. Bits in it are not happy or fried, I now know the commands to make the errors go away and have it running stable with my current version of FreeNAS. But what I really should do is look at a whole new build, but I’m holding off in hopes of SSD prices dropping because I would love a silent build.
I really appreciate the quick response and the feedback!
