Apple tv4?

Pardon my ignorance about airport express, but what does that bring to the table if one already has a modem/router and a decent working wired (and wireless) network? I know this is all speculative, but It’s fun to speculate.

This combining sounds real great :)

Dunno what it would bring to the table, maybe people who buy airport expres will go for atv instead… And as its no longer a hobby project but a recognized apple product i would think apple would now put some design effort on it to match the rest of the apple collection… It now has its own tab in the apple store and is no longer baked in below the accesorys… This alone feels like a good sign

Again just speculations

A reduction in the amount of clutter under the TV, especially if a cable tuner is included as well.

Thats if you have not built a node zero server cupboard somewhere ;)

I guess that's right for some people, but in my case the airplay would be redundancy and additional clutter. I just have a cat5 drop behind my TV. It services 5 devices. But you're also right in that one of those devices is a small Hr44 directv box. For me the annoyances comes in switching devices, more specifically the delays in HDMI handshakes with the AVR, I'd be thrilled to have that issue eliminated.

I have the ATV 3 next to my TV and that’s it. I’d much rather have a hockey puck than a tower (which is what the new airport express looks like.).

It would allow you to stream directly to AppleTV instead of from your computer to your router to your AppleTV.

Since WiFi is a shared medium you cut down traffic profoundly.

I don’t think cutting out the middle man will actually show a significant improvement. Let me know if I’m wrong.

Even with my limited understanding of how PlexConnect and even the iOS app work, I tend to agree. I believe if our networks are hard wired, there's very limited wifi in use during the Plex experience.

Of course if you use cables there's no improvement. But Apple aims to facilitate Air Play which uses WiFi and under those circumstances having the device that receives the signal also being the one that's connected to a TV will reduce used bandwidth down by about 50%. They don't think about our PlexConnet use case while engineering their updates. ;)

Besides, my PlexConnect setup uses WiFi from end to end and there is no quality problem.

MacMini (PMS & PlexConnect) connects via WiFi to AirportExpress in the office. AppleTV connects via WiFi to AirportExpress from the living room. I can stream full HD without a problem.
