AppleTV 3rd Gen or wait?

Hi,

I have plex installed on my mini-mac server and I love it. This is upstairs in the 'the office' and we can view and listen to media on this server from any device locally or remote.

I now want to purchase an AppleTV 3rd Gen but with the Apple WWDC happening on the 3rd June it is rumoured to reveal the Apple TV 4th Gen,

I guess this is hard to know right now but what are you opinions on the Apple TV 3.

I don't know whether to just purchase the 3rd Gen because plex works or wait for the 4th.

Do you think plex will work on the 4th in the same way?

I believe with the 3rd gen you have to go to 'trailers' once configured and you can see movies on plex there?

Can this find you music too? What is the interface like considering it is integrating plex within AppleTV? I don't want to use iTunes sharing to get it on the TV within a suitable interface.

Thanks,

There are rumours that with the Apple 4th Gen release, they will also release a new OS across all the Gen 2 and 3 devices. I recently had that dilemma and decided to buy one myself.

Current setup involves an iPad or iPhone with Plex installed, sending content to the Apple TV using Airplay.

With curent aTV (gen 2 and 3), you can access your Plex library, directly, with PlexConnect ! No iPad nor iPhone needed.

Thanks for your reply. So you use the IOS app - does that have the airplay feature within the app? Or is airplay done a different way?

Thanks for the reply. What are the menus like? Do you go into trailers and then just see videos on your plex server or do you have for example 'movies', 'music' etc, are there any limits to the interface as it's not fully integrated into aTV? or is it?

As to your original question, yes its hard to guess what will happen.  The new hardware version or OS version may break current methods.  Apple could also open up development to 3rd parties so it gets a proper Plex app.  This could happen on older hardware too.  Nobody knows.

Airplay method will probably still (always) work.

WWDC isn't that far away. Hold tight and see?

If you're only going to use this device for Plex there are other similar options that already have Plex clients, like the Roku3.  If you're tied into the Apple ecosystem and need an ATV then you wait or gamble :-)

Exactly you go to Trailers icon (or iMovies icon) and a
Plex client you have :
