AppleTV app crashes every few minutes with experimental player enabled

It’s immediate crash for me as well, it goes right back to the home screen.

@PutinShark could you please reproduce the crash again in the iOS app and then follow these steps to get me some crash logs from your device? https://support.plex.tv/articles/201636593-ios-logs/#toc-1

Thank you!

Yea I can just PM’d it to you. Did it a couple of times.

@sergiou87 im jailbroken if that helps. so if you need live crash logs lemme know i can get em

Same here. Immediate crash after few minutes. Apple TV4 (not 4K). Streaming mkv files from Synology running Plex Server.

If any of you who can reproduce the issue have a Mac and Xcode, another way of getting crash logs is by plugging your iPhone/iPad/Apple TV into your Mac, open Xcode, then Window → Devices and Simulators, select your device, and click on the button View Device Logs

There you will see a bunch of PlexMobile/PlexTV entries, you only need to send me those that you think were generated when the app crashed for you.

Right now no one in the team is able to reproduce this crash and I don’t have any crash report to study, so I’m blind here

i have enabled „Send Crash Reports“ in the Apple TV settings, this doesn‘t help? If not i‘ll see what i can do…

@TobiasAmbrosi it doesn’t, sorry :frowning: there are some types of crashes that are not sent to us and instead are kept in your devices. Usually when we do something the operating system doesn’t like (block the UI for more than 20 seconds, use too much memory…) is when this happens. Other crashes are sent to us.

I have a Mac although I need to install Xcode first, I’ll try to collect the requested logs.

I tried to get the log file, but no file is generated after Plex crashed (no new log file under “View Device Logs”),

Just sent you three Crash Logs and a Console Error Log, als the device logs say rather nothing. i have a complete Console error log from the last crash, but it was to long for a private message. If you want it just name me an E-Mail Adress i shall send it to.

Hope it helps to nail it down. The Movie crashed after 4, 6 and 8 minutes…

I think I’ve identified the crash thanks to @TobiasAmbrosi!! Seems to be related to DNS rebinding protection, which forces the app to play the video through an internal proxy that keeps everything secure.

It seems like the code in that internal proxy is not doing the right thing when dealing with huge amounts of data, increasing memory usage vastly and forcing tvOS to kill the app.

I’ll work on a fix as soon as I can, but if you need a workaround right now, you can temporarily either disable DNS Rebinding Protection in your router if you can, or disable secure connections in your Plex Media Server (in Settings -> Network -> Secure connections -> Disabled).

Let me know if that works, and thanks for your patience!

Thanks a lot for your analysis! I disabled secure connections in my Plex Media Server and it seems to work. Nice!

Disabling secure connections worked for me as a workaround, let us know if/when you have a fix, thanks Sergio.

The fix will be out for beta testers during this week (Wednesday, probably), and out for everyone in ~2 weeks.

Great, I’ll make sure to test it right away.

I’d like to report that I haven’t had any crashes with the beta released today after removing the workaround.

If anything comes up I’ll report back.
