Wow, this is total bullshit. I used to love Plex and recommended it to everyone until I found out that the free version has a one minute playback limit. Longer playback doesn’t cost you anything, it uses MY bandwidth, so there’s no reason why you should be charging me or determining how long I should be able to view MY movies for. That is a cheap shot. Total BS. You just lost my respect and support. I will be looking for an alternative solution.
Buy the app, one time, $4.99
or
I hear Emby is nice this time of year
(but you’ll be buying one of those apps too most likely. Probably cost about $4.99)
I dunno, I suppose developers like to be paid too.
Alternatively, if you consider your time “free” (as in it costs nothing), you could develop your own mobile app since the Plex API allows for that.
Absurd reasoning Denis, do you need a loan for $4.99 ?
He can ask his Mom for loan (or go through her purse) - the international exchange rates are murder.
My Interest rate is even worse
The thing that baffles me is the “I used to love Plex”
It just seemed to imply that the purchase of the app is a recent thing?
Best guess… Just someone who signed up to the forums today, because they are off all Christmas and New year and just needed something to fill their time.
or maybe their plex pass expired.
He joined the forums 2 hours ago, viewed 2 topics, created 1 topic, 1 min read time
My guess, venting an unexpected cost $4.99
sure could very well be.
he could also have had plex pass and previously never used the forums.
I have no idea, just offering an alternate scenario, for the extra drama.
I used it back when there was no time limit. There are already premium features they can charge users for. Charging to watch entire movies is a new limitation, and this particular type of limitation I consider to be ■■■■■■ up. Sort of like when hotspots want to limit the amount of users that can use it at the same time. That’s just milking the user. Charging for premium features makes sense, but arbitrarily limiting the most basic functionality isn’t cool. It essentially makes the free version useless.
If your a big fan of the product it is worth the fee. Personally I just bought the lifetime plex pass, if anything changes in the future I already own it. Quit being cheap and just pay so that they can make Plex even better in the future and support won’t disappear!
I have paid for products and services that I support. I just consider certain business practices to be nasty and lose respect for companies that do it. Paying $120 to be able to watch movies remotely, even if it’s a lifetime thing, is a bit ridiculous. I don’t know, it’s just rubbing me the wrong way. I haven’t been annoyed like this in a long time, not even sure why it got to me like that today. I usually never even sign up for the forums, etc. Maybe it’s because I haven’t had any sleep yet lol
the mobile apps have not been free for a long long time
Yeah it’s been a while.
For what it’s worth, remote access is not a Plex Pass feature, so there’s no need to part with $120:
https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass/#modal-features
If you’d like to use the Plex app on a mobile device, a one-time fee is required, but you can then use it on any device within that ecosystem (Android, iOS). And if you really don’t want to pay at all, you can always visit https://app.plex.tv in the device’s browser and use Plex that way.
The apps I bought (can’t count 'em - plenty) were ALL bought before any of them were free - and I never felt like I was being ripped off. $5 bucks seemed totally reasonable to me - and I’m, generally, an unreasonable person…
