Plex requires everyone to pay for my content

So, had a plex server for a while and shared my own content with a couple of friends and family members. Now they’re being forced to pay for plex accounts to watch more than a few seconds of video. Why? I don’t mind paying myself, buy why suddenly do they have to pay plex for my bandwidth?

The mobile clients (phones, tablets) have always had a 1 minute limit.

The limit can be lifted in one of three ways:

  1. A one-time $4.99 payment via the applicable app store
  2. Purchase a Plex Pass
  3. Be invited into the Plex Home of a Plex Pass holder.

Note that the one-time payment is tied to the purchaser’s app store account and cannot be transferred between accounts or stores. For example, if you have an iPad and iPhone on the same Apple account, that is only one $4.99 charge. If you later replace the iPhone with an Android phone, that is a second $4.99 charge, as the app is delivered by a separate store.

The non-mobile clients - SmartTVs, streaming boxes, desktop apps, etc - have never had a streaming limit and have always been free.

Additional information is available in the Player Apps & Platforms section of the Plex Documentation.

You may wish to peruse What are the features and limitations without unlocking the app?

See the Plex Home documentation for information on creating a Plex Home and inviting users.

This is from a laptop running Windows 10.

Still gets the 1 minute runtime before asking for money.

The Plex client from the Microsoft store? That was discontinued about two years ago.

Use Plex for Windows instead. No limits. No cost. Direct plays most media.

Apparently they were using a pre-loaded version of the plex app on their laptop. Having them go to the website to see how it works. Will know in a minute.
