Are files streamed from NAS or server PC? Attach NAS to router or put drives in host PC?

I have had PLEX forever and things are okay but the demand on my system is increasing. I guess I don’t know enough about how PLEX transfers info.

Current set-up. PLEX hosted on PC in the basement on wireless (no bandwidth issues yet)
NAS connected to router on main floor.

When someone streams a show to a TV does it have to get the file from the NAS to my PC and then back to them or are they streaming the file from the NAS with my PC just pointing the way?

If it is doubling up on traffic I will just throw the drive in the host PC. Does anyone know how this works?

So you’re pointing your Plex library to a mapped network drive?
If so, you could check by having task manager open and starting a stream that is stored on your NAS.
I haven’t tested this myself but my first guess would be yes, since Plex has process the file (adding subtitles,…).
If you see that ‘Network’ starts peaking, then you can be sure that it ‘streams’ to your PC first and then to your Plex Media Player.

That is correct. I did notice when I did that that I was connecting to my 2.5 with an ‘n’ connection instead of the 5G AC connection. . so that helped !
