I’m finding the combination of a Silicon Dust HD HomeRun Extend plus Plex DVR to be a major disappointment. TV shows seem to record just fine, but playback through the Plex app is almost unusable if you value the ability to skip forward 30 seconds or backward 10 seconds in order to skip over commercials. When the HD HomeRun Extend Transcoder Quality is set to “Original” format (MPEG2), I can play back the videos fine, but skipping forward spins for around 30 seconds with each skip, rendering it practically useless. When I set the Extend Transcoder Quality to “Highest quality” (AVC), the experience is better, but only for 1080i 30 fps content. With that type of content, skips spin for about 2-10 seconds, which is OK, I suppose. But, for 720p 60 fps content, I cannot play the recorded TV at all–the app (both on Xbox One and the PC) spins forever or otherwise freezes and hangs. Any thoughts? I’ve tried different client apps for playback, e.g. with varying results.
I’m very much interested in ditching my Dish Network DVR service, for which I’m paying over $100/month, in favor of the HD HomeRun/Plex solution, but I need to experience to be similar: I need to be able to skip over commercials in a snappy fashion, like my present Dish DVR does.
Some background: my server is a Netgear ReadyNAS 214 connected via gigabit Ethernet to my PC and Xbox via various gigabit switches. I’m running the latest client and server software (so far as I know). Plex-server-side transcoding has nothing to do with the above; all content is being directly played.
