Artist Radio and Clear Play Queue, Bug?

Plexamp 4.8.2 on MacOS and iOS exhibit same behavior. I was adding some new material to my Plex server and I decided to spot check some of the CD rips and entered an Artist Page and clicked on the Artist Radio icon to start playback of this artist and similar. After maybe 5 or 6 songs, I click on track name area to bring up the pop-up menu. At the bottom of the list is clear play queue. I click that and confirm the removal of the queue and let the track finish and stop all playback. To much to my surprise, the play queue remained populated but with 5 different tracks. I repeated the steps again, and the play queue continues to remain at 5 applicable tracks. Performing this action on a playlist and style radio functions correctly, but artist radio never will empty its play queue.

Would someone mind confirming this behavior?

Thanks

Almost certainly “clear play queue” interacting with Auto Play, but Plexamp logs would show.

Auto Play on or off produces the same results. Will try to post logs soon.

I changed some of the personal data but you should still be able to decipher what you need. I placed multiple carriage returns at the spot where I clicked on the clear queue function. Auto Play was turned off when this log file was generated.

Thanks for continuing to make Plexamp the best player it can be.

You know, I missed the fact that this was an artist radio, sorry about that. I think this is expected behavior, basically:

  1. Plexamp clears the play queue.
  2. Plexamp requests new play queue.
  3. Server says “I’m a radio and I have no tracks! I must add some”

If you’re trying to stop playback completely, hold down the pause button. But otherwise this play queue is special in the sense that the server is continuously adding to the end of it.

Thanks for the kind words!

Thanks for the reply. Honestly, I do not use Artist Radio too often, really just stumbled across this and the behavior seemed odd as it did not follow the same tendencies almost every other playlist or radio.

Playlists
Time Travel RADIO
Style RADIO
Deep Cuts RADIO

All exhibit the same behavior, when I clear queue, it clears the queue. Why does Artist Radio have to behave differently? Why doesn’t Mood Radio get your 3rd point and add tracks?

I choose clear queue so the current playing song can finish and end completely with silence and the app going back to the previous view screen. You are saying with Artist Radio, I am required to manually stop the playlist. If that is your intention, ok but surprised that with all of the mood radio choices and style radio choices etc etc, they all behave the same except Artist Radio. I can’t even manually delete a song without another being added. Every playlist can come to an end except Artist Radio.

I formally request a re evaluation of the Artist Radio behavior or make it a choice

Thanks

To achieve that, you could use the “snooze” feature just as well.

Artist and track radios work different than the other things you mention, and doing what you suggest would require a change on the server, not inside Plexamp. (You’re also the first person to make this request )

In my experience using the sleep timer → end of track function, sweet fades still acts and does not let the playing track fade out in its entirety. Also I hear a small snippet of the next track before the sleep timer engages and quickly fades to zero. The next track actually stops at 1 second. Unfortunately not a clean alternative.

An interesting observation is that when you start an Artist Radio, it will NOT disengage unless completely interrupting the music in some way, like full stop or interrupt currently playing track with new track not engaged by Artist Radio…

I did an experiment and started an Artist Radio, the chose clear queue. Plexamp removed the 15 or so songs and randomly added 5 that matched the criteria, as you say I should expect. I then went to a playlist and chose add to queue. The random 5 were removed in favor of the added to queue tracks. I then chose clear queue again. All of the tracks were removed and 5 random Artist Radio related tracks appeared in the queue.

Just my opinion, but it seems like programming the server to perform this task of keeping a queue non empty for only one of maybe 50 possible Plex curated Radio playlists in Plexamp (mood, style, decade) is an underutilized feature. What other areas of the system does this feature act upon?

I love Plexamp and will continue to use it and support Plex. I am just having a discussion about the Artist Radio function and why is what chosen to behave differently than everything else.

I recall I posted on this bug sometime back. Not sure it was attended to. Can confirm sweet fading into next track sometimes when sleep timer is in use.

Here. Yeah.

The sleep timer would be the best of both worlds here.

This is the expected behaviour I believe. I do that sometimes when I come across a track that reminds me of another track, I queue it to play next (or after the current list) then revert to the primary smart play function that intimated the playback after the queued stuff is done playing.

Artist radio (and track radio) are generated on-the-fly incrementally because of the high cost of computing the entire play at the start (like e.g. library radio does).
