Asking for help BEFORE I mess things up

Server Version#:1.14.1.5488-cc260c476
Player Version#:?
We decided to get a faster computer and use it JUST for Plex. Before I mess things up, how do I do this? Both computers are running Windows 10.

Right now, the Plex server is running on my office computer. It’s getting the files off an exterior hard drive, which I will unplug and plug into the new computer. I want to get the server off of my office computer and start running it on my Plex computer. I’ve already downloaded the server to the Plex computer, what should I do and in what order?

If you don’t want to transfer over your ‘played/unplayed’ status or any manual metadata edits,
all you have to do is

  1. install the server software and when it asks you to either create a plex account or to supply your existing plex account credentials,
  2. you supply your username and password.

If you however do want to transfer over your played/unplayed status and your metadata, you need to backup these data first.
They are not located (by default) on your external media drive but on the internal hard drive in your old computer.

Thank you!! I definitely would LIKE to transfer the status and metadata. I’ll work on backing that up and then I’ll give it a try.

OK, I’ve finished. Everything seems to be working fine on my new computer (Plex). The movies that I was halfway through are at the correct place, the shows I’ve watched are all correct, but when I try to go to my Roku, I can’t figure out how to get it to look at the new server (Plex) ONLY and not the old (Watkins). Both are being offered on some things (videos), others still look only for the old (TV, movies). But the old simply doesn’t exist any more, so those are empty. How do I tell it to stop looking to the old and look at the new only?

Try deleting the old server from here:
(but only the old server!)

You may have to restart your Roku
or in the extreme case sign it out of your plex account, restart it, then sign it back in.

Thank you. I checked, and it was the only server showing there, so I signed out of Plex on the Roku and signed back in and all was well… so I settled down to start watching something, but no matter what I wanted to watch, I got a playback error telling me to make sure the file exists and the drive is mounted. It is! I’ve opened the files, explored through the drive - it all works on my computer! But when I try on the Roku AND on my Plex Media player on my new computer (and the old one too), nothing plays!

I’m sorry for taking so much of your time! I thank you for all your help so far!

Do you have Plex media server still running on the old computer, perhaps?
You should avoid that at all costs. Check for the task tray icon. It must be not there on the old comouter.

OK, I’ve figured out what’s wrong, but don’t know how to fix it. All the files are trying to look at drive “P” which is how it was set up on the old computer. Here it’s drive “m”. I’ve tried scanning library but it simply doesn’t find a library to scan.

No, I uninstalled the server on the old computer before I installed it on the new one.

I just did that. It worked! Thanks!! I think everything is running ok now!
