Hello!
I have Xiaomi Mi TV with Android TV and Plex. And there I have a lot of issues with subtitles (everything works with Windows Plex player).
Most of ASS subtitles are well found but not visible during video playback. Without any error.
Here is the sample of such file: No OK.zip (15.3 KB)
Also I have found several files which are worked well. For example: OK.zip (9.3 KB)
Maybe I can someway transcode all the subtitles, but I don’t know what exactly I should do.
Unfortunately ASS/SSA subtitles are not supported on Android at the moment. People have been begging the Plex devs to add this feature for at least five years and as you can see, they haven’t implemented it yet.
Windows supports it, and allegedly the Apple TV client supports it too. I’ve had mixed results with testing. My iPad Pro 10.5" (with the exact same SoC as the AppleTV 4K) chokes on it, but my iPhone 12 plays the exact same file, with subs, no problem. Not exactly sure what to make of that.
If you don’t have a Plex Pass, you can try Jellyfin, which seems to support it natively in their Android client, and Emby likely does too, but they time limit their client without paying and I used most of that up in some earlier tests, so can’t really test now.
For the foreseeable future, I’ll be using Kodi with PlexKodiConnect on my Android streaming devices where SSA/ASS and PGS subs are supported without issue.
