External SSA Sub issue on Android TV

Dear all,

I recently installed Plex on my DS218Play and I love the combination. Everything else is great except one SSA subtitle bug drives me crazy.

Here are the methods I use to play movies with Plex:

  1. Using browser to play on PC.
  2. Using IOS app to play on my iphone.
  3. Using Plex android TV app to watch on my smart TV, which is going to be my main method.

First of all, SRT subs works fine across all 3.

SSA or ASS sbus works fine on 1 and 2, no need to burn subs, regardless if it set burn in sub at “automatic” or “image subs only”.

The bug is:
SSA or ASS will ONLY work on 3 if I turn "always burn sub " on Plex android TV app , which makes movies unwatchable because my NAS can’t keep up with transcoding to burn the subs.

In addition, VLC on my TV can play SSA subs without any transcoding.

My buttomline is: I want to watch SSA subs on TV without burn in subs and transcoding.

My logic is: SSA works on 1 and 2 so there is no problem with plex server or my SSA files. VLC can play SSA subs on my TV so there is no problem with my TV. The only explanation is this is caused by some bugs on Plex android TV app only.

Have anybody experienced the same issue? Could the dev team take a look at this?

seems related to Nvidia SHIELD/Android app SSA/ASS format anime subtitles + transcoding problems ?

Got the same problem when I stream through my old Samsung BD Player.
Gets really annoying when the show as a lot of titles; one bad for this is My Hero Academia, and would love a fix for it.
