.ASS subtitles not working on android devices ==> I found a painfull workaround

Hi,
I’m struggling with .ASS subtitles.
I don’t ask for conversion (never works well) I play remote content with “Original quality”

With a MKV or MP4 container the .ASS subtitles never shows up when I launch the Video.
I got that behavior with a Synology NAS or my Shield Server.
On my Android tablet, phone or TV.

the painfull workaround :
THEY SHOW UP : When I download 2 versions (MKV and MP4) and then I select a Version.
That way the subtitles show up.

After that :
When I put the screen off, and reopen the device : they disapear again

THEY SHOW UP : When I move forward in the video (only after the version selection).
Or when I redo the workaround.
OR when I switch off the ass subtitle then switch on

It’s definitely a client issue.

Would you please correct this issue ?

I got the issue even with SRT subtitles.

I can’t use PLEX .ASS subtitles they are not working

I really think it’s a major issue.

You should enable logging, play them to make sure it’s not working properly, then post the logs so the devs can look at it:

hi,
thanks for your response.

Here are the logs,
I reproduced the bug, and I also applied the workaround (version selection).

Please confirm if this is the same issue I found, reproduced, and submitted.

  1. With subtitles enabled (SRT is perfect. PGS with Nvidia Shield app is OK too)
  2. Start app (previously force terminated)
  3. Observe forced subtitles display perfectly.
  4. Stop playback
  5. Play another title with subtitles.
  6. Observe no subtitles displayed
  7. Confirm subtitles are shown as available in the video AND are already selected
  8. UNSELECT (change to None)
  9. Play 15 seconds
  10. Enable subtitles again
  11. Observe subtitles return normally.

(1) OK
(2) I don’t really encounter the issue with a “force terminated” usage.
(4 to 11) I can reproduce yes.

I especially also can reproduce when I swith Off the Android Screen and then switch ON it.

Thanks.

At this point, we need wait until the Android team fixes it.
