When trying to play MKV videos with ASS subtitles on Nvidia Shield, with Burn subtitles setting = Automatic, the video won’t play and I get “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.” If I change the Burn subtitles setting to “only image formats” it plays fine. These videos play fine on Plex Web and Plex iOS (haven’t tried other clients) with the Burn subtitles setting = Automatic.
Client version: Plex for Android 8.24.0.28335-beta
Server version: Plex Media Server 1.24.4.5081
This is happening for me also.
To get them to play for now, I’ve had to disable HDMI pass through… despite the fact it worked fine for over 2 years that way and my av receiver supports all formats.
I do believe this is a relatively new problem. It’s been working for me as well until recently. I can’t tie it to a server or client release, since the need to play ASS subtitles is a relatively random thing here (most of mine are SRT).
I am having the same issue as you on my shield pro, only disabling subtitles it works, but since it’s a different language I will need turn it on. This has happened to me last couple of weeks. About a month back, I do not think I had this issue. What happens to audio if I disable hdmi passthrough since my shield is connected to tv, then earc to receiver?
HDMI pass through being disabled results in audio streams being transcoded, but streams will work again.
Hoping the bug gets fixed so my NAS doesn’t need to transcode unnecessarily.
@soulvoid86 Thanks for cross-posting for visibility. I only posted on your thread because the one I started got no attention from Plex, and yours did. Hopefully they have enough to go on!
This appears to have been fixed in a recent update. Not sure which release it was, and I don’t recall seeing a fix mentioned for this particular problem, but I tested it again today and all is good.
