Atmos pass through, LGC8 to SK10Y

Hi,

I seem to be having issues getting Atmos to pass through from my TV to my sound bar for movies, however the 2 test files from the dolby website work fine in that for the test files my sound bar displays “Dolby Atmos”, however any Atmos movies I attempt to play with the audio track set to True HD 7.1 in the plex app only display as “Dolby Audio”.

I’m using an 18Gbps HDMI cable on the ARC inputs/outputs on TV and Sound bar. Firmware is latest on both TV and sound bar.

Example of file I’m trying to play: https://pastebin.com/uk3jMnbq

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It’s because the Dolby files are using EAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) with an Atmos core.

But what you are using in Plex is a TRUE-HD track with an Atmos core.

It’s impossible to work on this TV because of 2 reasons :

  1. ARC can’t send TRUE-HD or DTS-HD, it’s limited to DD/DD+ and DTS.

  2. This TV can’t play TRUE-HD (but can play DTS-HD), forcing Plex to transcode to AC3, and losing the Atmos core.

In opposite, you can get Atmos on Netflix because it’s using EAC3 + Atmos.

Hope it helps !

Thanks for the reply friend, very informative!

I wonder if there are any methods at all that I can get TRUE-HD to this sound bar? Or am I forever limited to experiencing Atmos via netflix alone? Seems as though all scene releases are encoded with the lossless codecs as far as I can tell.

You’re welcome

I don’t know how soundbars work as I’ve only use AVR, but if they work similarly, you can get True-HD Atmos if you plug an external device like a PC, Android TV, Roku… on it.

ARC is the problem here (+ WebOS but that’s another thing). Fortunately, ARC is dead, and the new standard, eARC, is able to send True-HD, DTS-HD and PCM7.1

Well there you go you solved my problem

Already had a HDMI cable running from PC to TV, switched it to the sound bar and now I’m getting Atmos - only through VLC though. Plex seems determined to transcode for some reason and I’m falling back to “Dolby Audio”.

edit - got there in the end with Plex Media Player, seems trying to use the web app forces a transcode with the lossless codecs. That was a fun day just to get Atmos working

It does always surprise me that people use the web app in situations where they could use PMP, as PMP has much better codec support than the webapp.

this may or may not help, lots of additional info @ Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k - a FAQ

Well, having used it for 24 hours now the complete lack of mouse support I imagine is a big one, I’m astounded how anyone could develop an app for PC this way, like what I’m supposed to buy a harmony remote just for Plex? At this point it’s honestly easier for me to just use VLC.

Turns out buying a sound bar has sent me back in time 10 years and made my smart tv not so smart any more lol

hmm, I have mouse support in PMP on Mac, which view are you in, web or TV, if TV check the settings and see if you have the ‘Mouse Disabled’ option checked

So I can click things, except for the sound settings to enable pass through those had to be accessed with enter key, I can click a movie to play it providing it is in view, if I want to scroll I have to use cursor keys on keyboard, just bizarre!

And yeah tv view as I was there to sort the sound settings, haven’t tried the non tv view tbf I’ll give that a go later

I stand corrected, the TV view does appear to have very limited mouse functionality. (that’s a bit rubbish)

I just use PMP in web view, so it is pretty much the same as plexweb, but with better codec support.

Ah, in that case thank you for the heads up, this is definitely what I need to do.

The only thing that is worrying me now is if passthrough will work in web view… as I don’t see an option to enable it that view :frowning:
