read this from today…
I believe him, he’s straight to the point usually, which I like
I purchased a Roku Ultra nov 2022 to try exactly this. Because I read that the new Roku Ultra could decode the new atsc3 audio. it did not. Acted exactly the same. Showed no audio stream. I just looked it up again, and it was a roku ultra 2019. I just purchased a 2022 ultra, lets see what that does.
Just checked the cheap Roku TV I bought a few months ago and ATSC 3.0 channels work with the Hdhomerun app there. Sadly my Roku streambar from 2020 doesn’t work though.
Sure, the hdhomerun app works. We want plex to work.
Because of DRM I tend to agree that, “It is unlikely that these would ever be available on [Plex] …”
Well, it’s a feature people actually want, so that doomed it from ever working in plex to begin with.
Don’t even need Plex to decode anything, just load and pass through ATSC 3.0, my AVR will play AC4
… update
I’d like to put my vote it for ATSC 3.0 support as well, for what it’s worth. I live in an area where certain stations are only available over ATSC 3.0 due to signal strength and interference issues on ATSC 1.0 and would appreciate the ability to use them via Plex.
Also, to clarify: the guide won’t pick up these higher (150-ish) channels until the support is added, correct? At the moment, I can assign something like CBS the lower channel id (say, CBS is 5.1), but the guide result doesn’t have the 151.1 station ID mapping.
Doesn’t the Plex competitor “Emby” do this, no problem?
I definitely wouldn’t say “no problem.” Emby will direct play or transcode AC-4. AC-4 licensing may be a question that is being ignored until it is an active problem, no official word though.
More importantly, Emby doesn’t and likely won’t support ATSC DRM. For many of us, we bought the tuner and the lifetime subscription and had the ATSC3 channels working and now are losing them as they become DRM protected. The ultimate troll job. No regrets for supporting Emby or Plex though, it isn’t their fault that TV networks are encrypting public airwaves.
Thanks for the perspective.
Plex is right to ignore this ATSC 3.0 mess. DRM is part of it and being rolled out all over. My ATSC 3.0 channels cant even be watched now never mind have audio, Subscription fees, copy protection (no DVR) spying on what you watch. Its about monetarization of OTA. Thankfully ATSC 1.0 is still here for now.
Using the new decryption functionality on StreamScope XM, broadcasters can transmit encrypted content in the ATSC 3.0 environment to better understand who their subscribers are and monetize NextGen TV services
Anne Schelle, managing director of Pearl TV, “We’re excited to join forces with Triveni Digital and help to ensure that ATSC 3.0 content, services, and information is well protected and secure.”
So protected that no one can even watch it. Yay!
Yes, my NBC affiliate has adopted DRM. The other three ATSC 3.0 networks have not… yet. When CBS and ABC both adopt DRM, then my ASTC 3.0 is worthless. I cannot fathom why stations that are allegedly operating as a public service are allowed to encrypt/DRM their content.
The NAB show is happening in Las Vegas right now. I’d expect a lot of talk about ATSC 3.0 this week along with more announcements, partnerships, products, whatever.
Yes, ATSC 3 is becoming one step forward two steps back with the DRM creeping in. Lost a couple channels recently myself.
