I don’t expect Plex to handle DRM as I think that would be a hurdle that dwarfs AC-4 licensing. I have a suspicion the devs saw this coming and that’s why we’ve seen no movement on it. The ATSC3 party might be winding down.
Silicon Dust has committed to DRM support for HDHR Flex 4k within their own app, eventually.
I think if we want Plex and Emby to support ATSC3, it might serve us better to ask broadcasters to leave off the DRM, instead of asking Plex to license DRM and make a system that will respect ‘do-not-record’ and other features. https://twitter.com/hearst
Yes, HDHR’s app handles every ATSC 3.0 channel fine (albeit some have audio sync delay issues), but every ATSC 3.0 channel using Plex live TV results in an error message, “There was an error while attempting to tune the selected channel. Please check your connection and try again.”
Up until a few weeks (?) ago Plex would tune the channel fine but without audio, of course.

So how I get it through broadcasters’ thick skulls that as far as I’m concerned “do not record” is equal to “will not get watched”. The advent of DVRs transformed broadcast TV for me from “there’s never anything on TV that I want to watch when I’m ready to watch TV” to “there’s always something recorded that I care to watch”. I do not want to go back.
Use ATSC 1.0
Right now we are basically in the beta period. If the DVRs still don’t work after the beta period is over and they start shutting down ATSC 1.0, then complaints directly to the broadcasters might make a difference. Right now their responses are likely to be “get a DVR that supports DRM”.
Any update been 2 years…
Same here. ATSC 3.0 channels won’t tune at all, just a spinning circle. Channels display properly on HDHR and Emby.
+1 on this. I am continuing to be disappointed in Plex with their inability to support the latest standards, including ATSC 3.0. This one has been going on too long. I have ATSC 3.0 broadcasts in my area and I can watch them through the HDHomeRun app and even record them.
It is things like this that make me happy I did not give into the Lifetime Plex membership.
It is clear to me that people here are posting without reading all of the posts.
After waiting for some time, I decided to make the jump to EMBY to try it. The ATSC3.0/AC-4 works great, now I can get a clear reception (with sound) in all the local channels, including fox and abc that were getting terrible reception with ATSC1.0. Now I can watch the super bowl… Go Chiefs!!!
I will keep plex because I have a lifetime subscription for my other content but it’s hard to believe that EMBY can handle the AC-4 but Plex fails in that arena.
Not hard to believe at all. Dolby hasn’t issued Plex a license yet.
What hardware are you running your Plex server and your Emby server?
Nothing special, older amd64 hp desktop 16 memory and 1 tb pool running truenas 12.0. the jail setup took a little digging but it works well.
You can watch the SB in 4K HDR for free with the Fox Sports app!
Confirmed: FOX to Stream Super Bowl LVII for Free in HD, 4K Without a Pay-TV Subscription – The Streamable
Thanks for the info! I spoke with the engineers at my local FOX affiliate. He said that they are currently only simulcasting their 720p signal on both ATSC 1.0 and 3.0. He also said that FOX currently provides the 4K HDR feed of the Super Bowl only to streaming platforms. It makes sense that they’re making it available for free on their streaming app.
Emby is great and everyone should buy Plex and Emby, but it’s a little trolly to keep ignoring the issue at hand and pointing out that Emby supports AC-4. Emby doesn’t support ATSC 3.0 DRM and we are losing channels. → https://a3sa.com/
LG had to sue Dolby over AC-4. I assume that Plex doesn’t have the legal team that LG does. I don’t think the ball is in Plex’s court.
AC-4 is a problem that didnt need to be. If they would have simply used E-AC3 (DD+) which everything has supported for the last 10 years and every streaming service uses we wouldnt have this mess.
Call your congress-person and the FCC.
It’s kinda disgusting that we mandate the use of patent-encumbered, non-free-license technology for broadcasting to the public.
At least this is “just” Dolby. The HEVC side of it is even more hairy.
Thanks for the information, I don’t know a lot about the technology behind the sound issue, I just know that I can watch the atsc 3.0 channels available in my area using EMBY but I can not with Plex. Personally I prefer Plex so I will definitely keep most of my content there. If there is a lawyer type that will compose a common letter that we could all use to send to our congress person, I’m on board. At lease form now EMBY gives me a work around.
It’s TOTALLY disgusting. The ATSC should be ashamed of themselves. They specified a AC-4 for sound, but royalty-free HLG for HDR video. It makes no sense.
2 year and a couple month update?
