ATSC3.0 Broadcast and AC-4 Sound

My Plex DVR will not record sound on the increasing number of ATSC 3.0 stations in my area, so +1 for this!!!

I can code this is Plex will share their source, BTW.

Looks like Plex removed all my ATSC 3.0 channels from the discovered list of channels :frowning:

Yes, you can just tell Plex to use a direct stream, and it should pass the file on to your player without any modifications. Just have to go to playback options and force the direct stream.

I have installed plex mediaserver on ubuntu 20.04 with the latest updates. I recorded a segment from an ATSC 3.0 station and when I run mediainfo, I do not see any audio stream at all. I tried it on Apple TV 4K as well as the latest Roku 4K. There is no audio stream at all. Everything works fine when I record an ATSC 1.0 station. Mediainfo shows AC3 audio stream and plays perfectly fine. I have 2 HDHOMERUN 4K tuners with the latest updates.

Not sure how many TV & DVR users are out there to justify the economics for Plex to license the AC-4 codec from Dolby at US$.15 to US$1.20 per device.

I’m guessing you got that info from Wikipedia?

ATSC 3.0 now live in Atlanta. Broadcasting just started two weeks ago and just found out about it now. No sound and the EPG did not have listings for the new channels, which are in the 100+ range.

Hopefully ffmpeg will get off their butts and add support for AC-4; it’s now reaching tens of millions nationwide. The rollout is happening; time to add support.

AC-4 is a proprietary, patented format that requires a license from Dolby.

Plex will never pay for that.

…we already pay to license some codecs, what makes you think we wouldn’t pay for codecs? However, licensing deals are not always very fast or straightforward.

I wouldn’t expect Plex to pay for a license due to the expense. However, I could see making AC-4 sound decoding part of Plex Pass, which might drive some more income for Plex, or at least some recovery of the license cost.

I would happily pay an additional fee to get my ATSC3.0 working with audio. The signal is much better than my atsc1 channels, and I understand that I am in the minority needing it. If it’ll help, sign me up (:

Yeah - just was trying it out as some channels went live in the Atlanta area recently - but of course no audio - and found this thread here - would love to see this sometime soon. Quality is way better on the video side for sure. Using HD Homerun 4K. Will remap back to the old HD channels for now.

If you have a TV that supports AC-4 decoding, does Plex just pass it through with Direct Stream?

Just purchased and ATSC 3.0 tuner. Now I have 5 local ATSC 3.0 channels broadcasting with NO AUDIO. I have Plex Pass and it’s disappointing to record TV shows with no audio. Will Plex ever fix this AC-4 audio issue? If not, then I’ll need to look for another DVR solution to run on my NAS and say goodbye to Plex.

ATSC 3.0 just launched in my area and I was unaware that Plex didn’t yet have the ability to play audio from these channels. Add me to the list of people who would really like to be able to use Plex for these channels. Luckily the Channels and HDHR apps do, but I’d like to be able to record and watch these channels through Plex. Thanks!

up to $1,210.00USD

So what is the exact issue? When will this start working?
