ATSC3.0 Broadcast and AC-4 Sound

The exact issue is waiting on the deal (legal) and then waiting on Dolby to fulfill their obligations to us by providing the source code necessary for decoding. Due to the license, we cannot use any other code but theirs so even if the decoder were available in FFmpeg, we can’t use it.

Then how is Emby doing it? Are they doing it illegally?

That is a question for an Emby employee, not one who works for Plex.

You would need to ask Emby, we have no knowledge of how they’re doing it.

Not really… I’m not saying Plex employees are not smart enough to do it, just that Plex Management isn’t willing to invest the time to make it work! They sell us a lifetime pass then ignore US! or worse.

They literally just mentioned the time (and money) they are investing to make it work and your response is to whine that they aren’t doing exactly what they just said they are doing?
Seriously…

Perhaps I missed that post? please quote it…

Can you do an AC-4 Passthrough? There are devices that can decode AC-4 audio, I would like to see that as an option same as you do for current audio formats with Direct Play

You replied directly to their answer that their lawyers are working the deal with Dolby by asking them how Emby is doing it so you did not miss it.

I don’t see any thing in that post that even vaguely implies they are investing anything…
…on the contrary the Software company Plex is waiting for Dolby to write the code for them.
There are many others that have figured out how to handle ATSC 3.0 including but not limited too Emby, SiliconeDust, Sony, LG,…
The AC-4 specs are readily available at Dolby’s web.

But the fact remains Plex says they are waiting… …but they cant even get the old technology to work (just search the forums for Live TV and/or DVR)

As mentioned previously, due to the license with Dolby, we HAVE to use their code, it’s not negotiable to write it ourselves based on a specification. We’re doing everything we can to get this working as fast as we legally can.

I totally get that that’s how it works. I expect that Dolby has their code written long ago. I would not be surprised if the big brands mentioned are using that code already and just have had a head start. But us Plex users are utterly frustrated about how long this is taking and some are not mincing words. It almost feels like government bureaucracy at work :frowning:

Dude, just stop. You obviously have reading comprehension issues along with a basic lack of understanding of how licensing, lawyers, software or apparently business in general works.
And my TV and DVR works great and has been for years. Sounds like you should go use Emby and throw incredulous tantrums there so they can be subjected to your ignorance and entitlement.

Thank You Dave. Looking forward to this working! The quality on my atsc3 channels are factors better than the old channels.

I’m a lifetime member as well and now I’ll have to switch to Channels or Emby. Four of my major networks are now Atsc 3. Please fix the audio now before all your subscribers leave. This is a Plex problem not ffmpeg. Own the problem and fix it like your competitors did.

Wow, yeah. It looks like Emby is what Plex was a couple years ago.

I’m very disappointed PLEX is not supporting sound on ATSC3.0. Tampa has all major networks on 3.0 and I’m a paying PLEX customer who’s starting to regret I paid. I was so excited to set up HDHomeRun Flex 4K to pick up the channels only to find out there’s no sound! This needs to be fixed as soon as possible or I’ll start looking at an alternative product and cancel my plex pass.
