ATV 3 can't setup PlexConnect -- fails at "Send Data to Apple"

After upgrading the ATV to software 7.0.1 (6912) I have no trouble connecting to the internet but PlexConnect no longer works. I performed a "restore" of the ATV when I did the software upgrade so I am starting from a clean slate, which might be important.

The issue is that the setup process for Plex requires pretty much two things:

1) add the PlexConnect server IP address to the DNS setting on the ATV

2) add a profile in the "Send Data to Apple" menu so that it looks for the custom Trailers certificate

At step 2 I get stuck. When pressing the play button I hear the audible beep from the ATV but no menu opens. Has anyone else experienced this same issue?

Unfortunately, the USB method of installation will not work for me because I do not own a Windows or Mac OS machine.

Never seen this before but maybe worth putting into DFU mode and restoring again, if you are getting weird things happening in the basic OS it is probably not a good foundation to work from.

@f00b4r, that is really wise advice.

Still, it's not something I can do myself without a Windows or Mac OS installation (with iTunes), from what I was reading. Good thing the nearest Apple store is a 1.5hr drive away... /s

Perhaps it will take less time to just acquire a copy of Windows and install it to an unused HDD.

When you restore the ATV you destroy the certificates that were previously loaded. The play button works to load the certs again, only thing is that you need to press it briefly (not more than one second).

I did not realize that there was any sort of timeout and don't recall that being the case.

Anyway, I tried DFU with a new Windows installation and I think I'm in a bit of a snafu now -- the ATV boots after iTunes says to disconnect and I just get a pretty ATV -> USB -> iTunes logo picture on the screen. It's hard to tell if I ever even reach the real DFU screen because I cannot use HDMI while the USB cable is plugged in.

Ho hum.

You get this after restoring the ATV and then booting it, if so it doesn't sound like it has restored properly. Why would you need the HDMI and USB plugged in at the same time?

This is how to properly restore your aTV via dfu mode:

Hookup only the micro USB and power cord while hooked to your host OS while iTunes is open. Once you see any lights on the aTV (white) immediately using the silver remote hold play and pause until the white light flashes very rapidly. Let go of the buttons. Now restore in iTunes.

You can’t restore from the aTV menu itself to try to get back to factory mode in a last ditch effort?

I wanted to use HDMI and USB at the same time in case the ATV would output any useful cues for entering DFU mode, but the process you describe is exactly what I did anyways, as per the Apple support site.

The ATV lights do rapidly flash and iTunes is able to detect it (just as is noted in Apple's instructions), but after it finishes the restore and tells me to disconnect USB the ATV just remains at that menu I described in post #5. I read elsewhere that there might be a specific USB cable to use (a few points about generic USB cables not working), but I tried a few that I had on hand, including one for a Kindle Paperwhite.

I am using a Roku 3 now anyway, which has no issues with Plex. I'll update later once I have time to either (1) borrow a friend's Macbook or (2) take the ATV to the Apple store, so that anyone that experiences the inability to open the Profiles menu might also fix it.

If memory serves me right it only works if you have the power cable either out or in, try it the other way from what you did before (USB will provide enough power for a restore).

Most sites say you don’t need the power cable. In my experience I always has to use the power cord with the USB to do a dfu successfully. I never have used a hdmi while restoring ever. Must be one damn small flat hdmi. :stuck_out_tongue:

I won't get to this for a couple weeks still. For the record you DO need a power cable with Gen 3:

  1. Connect your Apple TV to a computer (determine which Apple TV model you have):
    • Apple TV (2nd generation): Connect one end of the micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports.
    • Apple TV (3rd generation): Connect one end of the micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports. Connect the power cable from your Apple TV to a power outlet.
