OpenPlex bricked Apple TV 3

Hi all

My install of OpenPlex on my MBP (2011) appeared to go fine. I rebooted, per the Tutorial, and my ATV3 got stuck on the Computer/System screen. I couldn’t restore it on the Restore submenu of the ATV…I finally had to connect it to my Mac desktop via USB using Itunes and that finally restored it.

I would love to use Plex on the ATV3 but am wary of having the same result. Any thoughts

So if you were able to restore it how did OpenPlex “brick” your aTV? If you couldn’t restore your aTV from the aTV menu that surely is impossible to be an issue from OpenPlex or PlexConnect. A more likely culprit would be that you had a network issue or didn’t properly point the aTV DNS to your PlexConnect host or your mac wasn’t hosting PlexConnect properly to begin with. You should provide a full proper report using this template before pulling the trigger on saying OpenPlex (or PlexConnect) caused your issue(s):

Sorry about the wording…I was unaware of the report template and will use it to report completely. I was disturbed about what happened to my ATV3 after the reboot.

I’m sure your software is excellent

Thanks
Todd

When the ATV3 reboots and only two applications are shown (computer & settings) the ATV is not bricked. It simply means that access with Internet is not possible. Either communications are broken on that moment, or the ATV has the DNS pointing to a service that does not works.

If the ATV has the DNS in “automatic mode” it will always populate the ATV screen with all applications, except when communications are broken. If ATV3 has the DNS pointing to PlexConnect and applications are missing after reboot it is a sign that PlexConnect was not launched properly, or cannot be reached (wrong DNS IP coded in the ATV3 ?)

Thanks…I am still an Apple TV noobie, as you can see

I did have the correct DNS from the PlexConnect on my MBP in the ATV DNS menu. I see that there must have been a communications problem
