I have both atv2 and and atv3 and wanted to share my experiences of both.
I’ll start with fact the atv2 is jail broken which makes it easier to get plex on to the atv 3 has the side loading Plex connect setup via apple trailers.
I’m not comparing the additional features of jail breaking but simply Plex on both platforms and to be honest I would happily take the better performance and 1080p of the atv3 over the jail broken atv2.
Ordinarily I wouldn’t use the ATV3 unless the Plex server was on and running so doesn’t make any difference that I can’t do anything unless it is. I’ve got plex running on a Mac mini which fires up plex server, the plex connect DNS script and plex theatre at login and all works seamlessly over wireless.
What it boils down to is the content, I have no issue waiting for down loads and have plenty of storage space to keep 1080p rips of TV and films, so for me the ATV wins cheaper to buy second hand ATV3 and wait whilst my next new watch downloads.
Just wondered what everyone else’s opinion/ experiences are of the two products?

I have ALOT of atv’s but mainly atv3’s now. I use my (2) atv2’s jailbroken on ios 5.3 spoofed to get more apps with plexconnect installed as mobile media device so i dont need to drag a os/device with me when i go on vacation. What I like about the atv3 over the atv2 is obviously 1080p but also the use of themes that only work on ios 6.x+. I also have plexconnect on my non atv jailbroken ios devices so if I decide when I go on vacation I want to bring a atv3 instead I’m basically all set as well. Plus the price tag on a atv3 new/used is a lot cheaper then trying to find a used atv2. I guess in the end it depends on your needs/wants/usage.
