Like many here the road to using Plex through the Trailers feature is not so smooth on ATV3! So has it been designed as a temporary solution until a JB's released for the ATV3? I'm wondering if a Jailbroken install provides a far more stable result, as Plex would then be installed on the ATV rather than served to it so DNS settings might not need changing and connection to PMS be automatic and straightforward?
Plexconnect is incredibly stable in my experience. As someone who was trying to help you earlier it was clear that you had no idea about what you were doing, so I think you should step back a bit.
Further, many with jail broken ATV 2s are switching to ATV 3s with Plexconnect because it just works better. Don't let your own experience/ineptitude force you into slagging an amazing and even superior solution.
Excuse my snippiness but your "like many" comment and the exclamation mark are self-serving.
Let’s say while I don’t share institute11’s passion I do share the sentiment. I’ve not read or personally experienced a “poor” performance with PlexConnect.
In order to get more constructive please share what precisely about the experience has been suboptimal? What is your benchmark? How would you improve the experience?
Ouch! Er, a little harsh! I'm more than grateful for your help and I certainly didn't make the post to criticise Plex in any form, I meant it as a genuine question. Yes I'm new to this but not inept! I wasn't implying anything about it's stability, rather it's usability. I'm generally very impressed by the features Plex offers and I'm paid up, however the experience has been more complex than my previous setup using PS3 and PS3 Media Server (which I wanted an alternative to because the fan noise of PS3 in the heat of Hong Kong is too much).
My assumption was that if Plex was a standalone feature on a JB'd ATV then it would be there in addition to the trailers feature rather than overriding it and I still don't see that as an unreasonable question?
To further expound - whether it’s being served via a DNS setting or through the IP address it’s essentially the same; it’s through your local network.
Essentially you want an additional icon?
On my old JB'd ATV1 you are able to install 3rd party apps direct into the ATV OS and would be there regardless of any server (but of course needing a server to function), so my thoughts were that if Plex was actually installed on the ATV (and had it's own Icon - yes) then would that make for an easier way to connect with the server.
Plexconnect is a third party solution created by a few really bright, hard working developers. It is not an official Plex app and is basically a bonus for Plexinc and for ATV 3 owners. I think we should all appreciate that. The ATV3 has not been jail broken for a year and a half, after all.

Perhaps the title of my post could have been different so apologies for that.
Look I'm certainly not belittling the obvious enormous amount of effort and hard work put into making this work by you guys and you've done a superb job.
I’m not part of the development crew, I just appreciate their efforts.
Me too, and wouldn't the same people write a standalone app if that was also a solution?
Essentially it was made because:
- it could be / the pure challenge of it
- not everyone is technically savvy enough to save their SHSH blobs to get a jailbreak
- jailbreaks do not exist for some firmwares or for the ATV3 and where they do there can sometimes be a huge delay
- it actually provides, in many people’s opinion, a superior experience to the native client (we are limited by the Apple firmare but also benefit by utilising Apple’s own optimisations within that firmware)
- any native client does not have an official SDK to build against, which is um problematic
- Apple has not yet tried to block this unlike native jailbroken applications consistently getting broken
The setup and running will be getting smoother.
If you have a jailbroken ATV you can change the icon to a Plex one but we have not expended the effort on this as it really is a cosmetic issue and the trailers app has a pretty relevant icon.

Now that answers it perfectly - many thanks for taking the time to write that and now I fully understand what it is. Incidentally since the tweaks to my installation following the assistance I got yesterday everything is running very nicely now.
Again my original post was not intended to offend or criticise - I obviously hadn't fully grasped what it is so perhaps my question was more naive than anything else. And again thanks to all those who gave up their time to help out and to those who put the work into this in the first place.
Oh well, looks as if my original question was right sadly. Thanks to all who made it work while it did and to those who made me grovel with apologies - nothing to say!
It works now. You haven’t seen the posts about the https fix?
Ooops, no I haven't so thanks for that reply, looks like I might need to grovel again!!
I am not worthy, you guys seriously rock - thanks a million. Follow this if you haven't already - http://langui.sh/2013/08/27/appletv-ssl-plexconnect/

I'm the owner of an aTV2, which was originally jailbroken with Firecore's AppleTV Flash (black). Over the years, I've been using the 3rd party developed Plex Client for jailbroken aTV2s and/or XBMC 12 with PleXBMC add-on. Not anymore. Since I learnt about PlexConnect, I reverted my aTV2 to it's original unjailbroken state, with latest firmware.
I did so, because, in my humble opinion, PlexConnect is a much more elegant solution, a true breakthrough, simply because it plays your media using the native ATV2 media player. In case of formats that the native player cannot handle, the server simply transcodes on the fly.
In my experience, using the native media player means: NO hangs, NO out of memory, NO need for reboots.
Paraphrasing Steve Jobs, it "just works".
