Audio Descriptions Issue

Does anyone know how to or have a work-around to force PMS to strip off the “audio descriptions” that some shows and movies are now embedding in the audio track?

I understand the Audio Descriptions are an ADA thing but I’m not blind and don’t want to listen to them. Plex playback plays them randomly. Any way to permanently turn them off, disable them, or strip them out on save?

It’s annoying when a movie or tv show starts to playback and there’s an audio description playing over the regular audio track.

Descriptive Audio and Commentary tracks are separate audio tracks in the movie/show.

You can use tools such as MKVToolNix (Mac/Win, MKV), XMediaRecode (Win, MKV/MP4), or Subler (Mac, MP4) to remove the undesired tracks.

Plex defaults to the first audio track in the file that matches your language settings. If you have movies where you want to keep the descriptive audio track, commentary track, etc., make sure they are not the first audio track in the file.

Note also that Plex remembers the chosen audio track the next time you play a movie. So, even if a movie starts with a non-desired audio track, Plex will remember which audio track you manually selected and use it the next time you play the movie.

To avoid the situation in the future, do not rip the descriptive audio, commentary, etc audio tracks. Most DVD/Blu-ray ripping tools, such as MakeMKV lets you choose which audio tracks to rip. The descriptive audio, commentary, etc tracks will be listed after the primary audio tracks for a given movie/show.
