Audio in sync on some plex players but out of sync on others

I have had audio sync issues with Plex for a long time on many different video files, but found that changing the Direct Play and Direct Stream options usually (but not always) fixes it. I decided to do an experiment after one movie recently suffered audio delay of at least 1 second. I first played the source .mp4 file in VLC on the same windows machine that’s hosting my plex server to confirm the audio was in sync (it was), then I tried the following players with results below:

  • Chrome Mac and Windows (different machines to server), Plex Android app: audio in sync
  • Roku Express 4k, Roku Streaming Stick 4k Plex app: audio about 1 second late

Can anyone help explain why this might be? And how to fix the issue?
