Direct Play Audio Sync

After a Plex upgrade from 1.20.1.3252 to 1.21.0.3616 and an OS upgrade from Ubuntu 18.x to 20.04.1, the audio on my TCL Roku embedded goes out of sync when in Direct Play. After starting an episode of That 70s Show (which immediately starts up with the guitar Bahhhh nehh nehh nehh neh neeehhh) - there’s a quick audio skip about a second into the guitar riff that lasts a quarter of a second or so. After that, the audio is always behind the video. It’s quite noticeable when they sing (Haangin’ Out…).

If I disable Direct Play, there’s no pause and the audio is in sync. However, the server is running in a VMware virtual machine, so I can’t use hardware acceleration (yet). I need to save every CPU cycle that I can for now.

This is a new development - I’ve watched through this show before on this player without noticing (It’s not the file), and watching other streaming apps on the TV has no delay (It’s not the soundbar).

I have an external Roku Ultra on another TV running the same version of the player, and it doesn’t have the same issue. I am able to Direct Play on this system without the audio stutter and delay.

I attached a tail of the Plex Media Server logs for each device in Direct Play mode. I hit play at about 39 seconds after the minute for each (14:05:39 and 14:55:39) and let them run past the guitar riff.

Any suggestions on how to solve this?
