Plex on Roku audio way out of sync on all movies that are encoded in stereo

Plex Server 1.18.3.2156
Roku Plex Version 6.4 build 9
Roku ultra 4660X
Onkyo TX-SR373 Surround Sound Receiver 5.1 channel setup
Samsung Electronics 4K Smart LED TV (2018), 65" (UN65NU6900FXZA)

Plex Server runs on windows 10 pro - version 1909 build 18363.535 installed 10/11/2019
CPU - i7 3770K
16 GB of Memory
GPU (2)GTX 680 2GB - SLI disabled since plex crashes if enabled when using hardware acceleration.

In the past month or so I noticed that all my movies that have stereo sound (2 channel) start off extremely out of sync with the video. I’m not talking 1 second here, I’m talking about 5-10 seconds. If I rewind a little bit everything comings into sync and stays in sync. All 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound movies have no audio sync issues. The movies all say direct play when I look at the stream info. I have a variety of roku devices throughout the house and my family room roku is the only device that experiences this audio issue. This also only happens in Plex. Netflix, Disney+, etc, etc all work absolutely fine.

My setup in the family room is different in 1 specific way. I have surround sound. Here are some more details along with a server log of me starting a movie waiting to confirm it is out of sync, rewinding to bring into sync. Starting a 5.1 channel movie plays fine.
Plex Media Server.log (515.2 KB)

Everything has a wired gigabit ethernet connection and 4k movies with surround audio play absolutely fine so it’s not a bandwidth issue.

Roku HDMI into Surround Sound Receiver.
Surround Sound Receiver HDMI into Samsung TV
Receiver controls the volume and sound. TV sound is disabled.

I’ve tried every setting my receiver offers thinking that the problem is caused by taking the stereo audio and transforming it into fake surround sound via Dolby PL II Movie. I don’t think that is the case since rewinding fixes the problem. I also changed the receiver to play Direct and not create fake surround but the audio sync issue was not fixed.

I have no idea what to look for in the logs so I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’ve reinstalled the roku plex app. I’ve logged out and back in, reset customizations to no avail.

Love PLex but this issue is driving me nuts.

I am having a very similar issue. The same movies that sync horribly are fine on my Samsung Plex app. I hope this gets resolved.

a little bit of new info. I started a movie on my tv upstairs and watched about 30 minutes. I came down to the Roku in question and resumed that movie and the audio was in sync…

comical at this point.

So I’ve made additional progress which I hope helps diagnose the problem.

I started the same move that was having audio delay issues and pushed down to see the time ticking.

the movie starts at 0 seconds goes to 1 and then 2 seconds and then magically jumps to 12 seconds!!! So the video is jumping 10 seconds which is the exact delay I am experiencing.

Anyone out there willing to look at whats going on in my logs?

Pretty please

here is a new log with verbose logging turned on if that helps.Plex Media Server.log (39.1 KB)

This setting on your roku appears to solve the problem. set auto adjust display refresh rate to disabled and problem disappears. I assume roku introduced this recently and why everything got screwed up.

If Roku is set to Auto Adjust Display Refresh Rate under advanced settings (this is necessary if you want things like camera pans to display smooth, not all choppy – not sure how anyone could stand it any other way), often the video playing in Plex will not have audio synced correctly, requiring you to skip ahead/back to get it to sync back up.

Disabling auto adjust display refresh rate worked for me.

Was having the exact same problem, I now remember I was testing this feature out on the Roku and forgot to disable it. Seems to cause nothing but problems for my setup
