Audio out of sync

I just disabled direct play and left allow direct stream enabled. This worked.
Since I upgraded from a roku stick to ultra, this has been annoying the CRAP out of me. At first, I noticed it was only a problem with .AVI files with mp3 as audio…those are the only ones I noticed out of sync… but lately, I’ve noticed some AC3 going out of sync as well. I’ve tried all the tv audio and changing roku audio settings…which will cause plex to transcode the audio which worked, but I don’t want to have to transcode audio…I guess direct stream is the next best thing to direct play.

From my original posted Q…
Im playing files from TV Shows recorded using HDHomeRun quad tuner.
I check my TV (samsung) DTS which is disabled.
I am using an NVideo Shield pro to the TV on hdmi
When I open any tv show and skip more than once 30sec audio is ahead of video.
I can exit Plex and go back in and still out of sync from resuming playback.

Im going to go back to my Amazon FireTv and see if I have same results

My live tv audio goes out of sync, starts off ok, but over a long period goes out of sync

Annoyance i have noticed in this. After I hit play I see audio out of sync if i hit skip back and play the show reloads and all is in sync.

For anyone using a Roku - have you attempted to turn off “Auto-adjust display refresh rate” in the Roku’s advanced platform settings? (assuming this was enabled at some point).

I turned that off a LONG time ago…it didn’t help in regards to some media…I’ve even had “some” direct play media out of sync…disabling direct play on Roku ultra settings and allowing direct stream everything that was out of sync in my media is now in sync again. So I’m leaving direct stream enabled and direct play disabled. This is the ONLY thing that has worked for me after trying virtually everything

My dad has an up to date Roku Ultra as well and have been having this issue since I set up Plex 5 months ago. I have the NAS with Plex setup at my apartment and never have I seen out-of-sync issues on my Hisense Android TV, Xbox One, iPhone 6s, Samsung Note 9 or Beelink Android box. However, my dad consistently gets this issue on his Roku Ultra. To save some time, I have literally tried each temp solution offered on this thread with little to no luck.

As @ljunkie asked, I did try turning off "Auto-adjust display refresh rate” and it did work for a few hours, switching between different shows, but eventually starts happening again, with no other changes to any configurations client and server side.

I hope the fix comes out sooner than later because its been unbearable to watch on the Roku Ultra.

Wow coincidentally there was an update to the Plex on the Roku Ultra last night, and all shows I’ve tested with have no audio sync issues. Even with the setting changes made from testing reverted back to default, audio is synced up for all episodes through the full duration. Can others please confirm?

did you find a solution? this happens to me all the time with live tv 1080i sources (HD HomeRun Prime with cablecard). It’s super frustrating.

No I didn’t find a solution. (Although the server, client and homerun hd boxes have been restarted and its seems to be ok now?) TBH I have been trialling another live tv ap and although rare I do get audio problems but its usually seems to be when the client’s (nvidia shield) has been maxed out or upset in someway.

Update…Think my audio sync is fixed.
I went into the NVideo Shield pro Audio via the stacked horz lines button on remote
Found DTS enabled and disabled it.
Went back into my TVShows and played a few… all of which I beat up the the ffwd 30sec skip then played…all sync just fine. Went fwd and back over and over on a few shows all played correctly.

I just read thru all new posts since last year - this is a pretty crazy issue, but I just ran a quick test on a Samsung UHD TV I got a few months ago, and my problem is the Roku.

Plex on the Roku: I played 2 movies that I’ve ALWAYS had to uncheck “Allow Direct Stream” otherwise audio sync is way off, and had to do it again.

Plex on the Samsung TV App: No fix required! The movies synced perfectly.

I haven’t had any issues AT All for the longest time until recently when I tried to play some HEVC files (direct stream) OR direct play…audio was out of sync…It’s so RANDOM when it happens and I’ve noticed that sometimes files that I have played that weren’t out of sync in the past on the SAME Roku ultra, will be out of sync the next time I play them…but pausing/starting puts it back in sync, and from then on, the rest of the files are in sync…it’s just the initial starting that’s out of sync. It’s baffling and been going on for the LONGEST TIME.

Darn it! I thought I was on to something. This is baffling, but I also want to add that it happens sometimes when I’m in Prime on my Roku, and I cannot find any way to fix it. I just quit watching Prime for awhile. I’ve never seen it with Netflix.

Is it beyond the bounds of possibility that there can simply be an audio sync function built into Plex?

This, to me, seems to be a fairly routine function in a platform such as this.

While most of these comments have mention Roku or some other device, like at least one other person in this stream I am seeing this while running on the same windows device as my Plex server (no external HW involved, plays in a chrome browser). If I stop and get back in, the video and audio are back in synch for a time, but seem to get more and more out of synch as time goes on. I have only noticed this for the last couple of months. I keep the Plex server up to date, so it has been updated a couple of times since this problem started.

Go to Roku plex app settings (master menu, not episode/season menu).

Turn off BOTH direct play and direct stream.

This solved the problem for me.

Of course that solves the problem because everything is transcoded. Nothing direct plays…which is ridiculous…

I had a series in which I used Xmedia Recode to level audio to 89db and I used AC3 as the codec…Every other episode was out of sync, even though everything was direct play or direct stream. I changed the entire series audio codec to AAC, and everything is in sync…I’ve noticed that AC3 and MP3 are the worst for being out of sync. I’ve never noticed an out of audio sync if the audio codec is AAC…

Side note: If I come across a video that’s out of sync. I pause it, restart and it’s back in sync…after that, it plays perfectly in sync the entire time. But the fact that it’s out of sync in the first place when the original file is NOT out of sync is annoying.

I can say this whatever this issue is, it has everything to do with Roku ultra and not other Roku versions. I never experienced ANY of this with my media UNTIL I got a Roku Ultra. Before that, I had a Roku stick and everything played perfectly but it was painfully slow in navigating around…The Roku ultra is miles better but this audio sync issue makes me almost HATE it.

Changing to Firestick worked for me…Finally…a resolution. We’ll see if it sticks. In the meantime…Thanks so very much!

What is DTS? Thanks.
