Audio out of sync

I’m using X Media recode to change the audio only of my .Avi files, then copying the video. I’m changing .mp3 to .AC3. at constant and a higher bitrate and copying back to .AVI container. During the process I’m also leveling the audio to 89db. I absolutely hate re-encoding audio or video but if done at a higher bitrate/samplerate the quality change isn’t noticeable. The process is pretty fast too since not re-encoding the video.

This is something I have been doing to a lot of my files to level the audio in the past because some episodes were so loud vs others. I noticed the series that I have already done this too played perfectly in sync…Luckily, I don’t have many more to do. I totally do NOT understand why the .AVI files are out of sync. Using mvktoolnix to put the .AVI into an .MKV container does NOTHING… Going through and checking different file types…HEVC, MP4, MKV, all play perfectly UNLESS they have audio that is in .MP3 format. I have ran into a few .MP4 files that had Mp3 as the audio codec (those were out of sync too!) Luckily, I don’t have many more .AVI’s to do since I’ve done most of them the past few years. I have never had anything work that levels the audio in files better than x media recode.

Anyway, could someone explain to me about the Mp3 direct stream. If the audio is Mp3, it direct streams not matter what. I turn direct stream OFF in Roku settings, change the HDMI settings in Roku, no matter what, MP3 direct streams. I thought I could just transcode the MP3 audio but I couldn’t get MP3 to transcode. I can get AC3 to transcode, but not MP3.

I am also having this issue on the Roku Ultimate. One of my TV shows plays the audio; however the video is high speed. This is only happening on the Roku, not on the Samsung Plex app, nor on the Apple TV. I have also had sync issues lately. For instance certain movies will not start with the studio logo (it is cut off) and the audio starts as if the logo was shown (for instance, you can hear the MGM Lion roar, but no video is shown). The video does not match up. Again, only on the Roku. Very messed up. Thank you!

This also worked for me.

Brand new issue for me this week, just started having sync problems out of nowhere. Seeing primarily on Roku TV and Premiere.

Trying the direct play off/direct stream on method some have suggested, with fingers crossed.

…and that didn’t work. Anyone else having any luck at all with this?

Hey all…I wonder if this is our issue…

Another possibility…

For those still following this…this solution appears to have helped, for now.

For some reason, setting the “Refresh Rate Switching” to On seems to work.
On the NVidia Shield Android TV app.

Strangely, it worked for a couple of Days. Then, got out of sync again…

@Plex ? Are you even aware of this problem? It is a real show killer. And you are not giving any feedback.

Hello, Im new here but not to networking voice, data, firewalls or media so here is my 2cents.

After reading everyones comments and tries of which I have done same and still have random results but still all equals audio sync,

I am wondering if its just the way time skip fwd/backward then play lack in actually clearing out any buffers and re-reading the file to play forward. After recently moving into NVidia Shield Tv pro and doing multiple fast fwd to skip commercials (very impressed with speed)…audio was off by 2sec. Went back then play…same offset. exited the show then back in… same offset. Exited plex, back in and same offset. Seems cached memory isnt clearing or is just corrupt. I would gladly give up fast fwd play to fast fwd, pause, then play a clean file. Just a thought

Synology DS415
HDHomerun Quad
NVidia shield pro tv
Netgear Gig Pro switch

I’ve noticed the same thing. So far an unplug/replug will clear it (or for my TV a off/on) but it typically happens after a fast forward/rewind.

Disabling the Roku refresh rate setting also worked for me. Let’s hope it holds.

Has there been any acknowledgement from plex on this?

Live TV through plex is unusable because of this. Unfortunately, I wish I could take my plex pass back out of principal that I’m essentially supporting a broken product and what I specifically paid for isn’t usable.

Someone else mentioned it in this thread but this is unique to the plex app and specific to Live TV. I have no issues with my movie or tv library video files within plex and I have no issue with Live TV in other apps outside of plex–I am currently using the HDHomeRun App on my NVidia Shield and it never runs into any audio/video out of sync issue. Just to twist the knife a little more, I use the Android TV Live Channels app over top of it (which is just an abstraction for apps as sources) without any issues playing through that, either.

Again, specific to Live TV within plex… that’s what consistently shows this. Starts out fine but drifts shortly after. If there’s anything I can provide to help troubleshoot, I will.

Machine and network specs aren’t an issue. Everything is connected via cat6 and PMS runs on an i7 box… my clients are all nvidia shields.

Just went ahead and reproduced it with debug/verbose logging in place. Where do I send it to? Considering it contains pii, I rather not post it directly here.

audio is only out of sync, if DTS. if you disable dts sound in settings in plex, you wont have the problem anymore. so bad plex dont fix this.

some said by disabling direct play but allowing direct stream.” and issue has been resolved, not true, doesnt work, there is no sound at all if dts is played with direct play disable.

Multi-Channel audio boost in settings set mine to large, doesnt work also, the issue is DTS.

Plex Server: 1.18.6.2368
Plex Player : 6.4 Build 10 Preview

I have the same issue on my Roku Streaming Stick + devices. The issue seems to show up only when playing a video that is 24hz and the “Auto-adjust display refresh rate” setting on the Roku is enabled. That setting does allow the Roku to properly display the video in 24hz, but the audio is out of sync from the beginning. Using the 10 second rewind button does fix it. If i disable this setting, it works fine but the movie is shown in 60hz rather the intended 24hz.

I am using the preview version of Plex, but this has been an issue for a while and even when i was using the public release version.

Thanks for the hint!
I set the “Passthrough” setting to “HDMI” instead of “Disabled” and now everything works fine on my NVidia Shield.

I thinks there still is a bug. But thanks for the workaround.

I am also experiencing this issue. Plex for windows 1.6.5

Same issues here with software transcoding. Rewind by 10secs works. Moving to hardware transcoding also works but this is not a possibility/practical for everyone.

I noticed mine was doing the audio out of sync issue on my Roku Plex app after I set the volume mode to Night Mode a few days ago. Turned the Volume Mode to off and it fixed the issue. Tested several movies and TV shows with it both set to Night Mode and off and was able to repeat the audio out of sync issue with it turned to Night Mode. It’s worth a shot if you want to try that setting.
