Audio Pass through Fails to Play

Server Version#: 1.18.6.2348
Player Version#: latest Amazon Fire TV one

Hi there,
I am trying to understand what is going on here with my audio. For reference my fire tv 4k is connected to my Samsung one connect box. The one connect has an optical out to my Yamaha receiver.

In my plex app on the fire tv I have audio passthrough enabled (optical) and AC3 checked. This works fine, except the audio will be transcoded from DTS to Dolby. If I enable DTS my video will fail to start playing. If I disable passthrough my video will play fine but I will see my receiver audio channels appear to be just the front L/R. It says dolby digital (not DTS) yet checking plex for the stream it claims its not transcoding anything (it is playing the DTS audio) so not sure what happened to the DTS audio.

My Yamaha receiver supports most audio formats except for some of the much more recent ones. So it does support DTS MA.

Anyone have any info? Can I get DTS working or some sort of non-transcoded surround audio?

I tried checking if the Plex app installed directly on my TV has the same issue but it seems pretty useless with a whopping 1 option for the audio (boost) to choose from.

pretty sure fire devices don’t support dts.

your better off with a roku or appletv, or nvidia shield if you ever want to have HD audio (truehd/atmos).

I never quite understood what an “optical” pass-through setting is supposed to do on a device that has no optical output.

I take it the receiver does not do video pass-through? I would think connecting the stick to the receiver direct and setting for HDMI pass-through would be most likely to work.

Thanks all for your replies.

So I had read the incompatibilities from Amazon for DTS but the info I was reading was quite dated. I noticed the DTS option under pass through so I figured it should work now? Otherwise why include it… ::man_shrugging:

As for connecting the fire stick directly to my receiver. It does support pass through and upscaling should I care for it. I would have preferred to connect the stick to the TV first as this allowed for using just my TV speakers for basic things like Youtube without having to fire up my whole HT system. Anyway to see if it made any difference I have connected it directly to the receiver. With or w/o HDMI passthrough enabled am presented with Dolby Digital + audio which is at least better than what I was getting before. And now to really confuse things I changed it to optical passthrough w/ DTS enabled. I get DTS and I’m not even using an optical cable. Oddly I don’t get DTS-HD MA even though I can still confirm Plex is sending the un-transcoded DTS-HD MA audio.

Technically I guess I am better off using Dolby + over DTS but I don’t get why the stick can’t just pass through the audio regardless of what format it is. It seems like passthrough is not really truly 1:1 pass through.

I’m open to idea’s but it would seem, as suggested, that Amazon is not the right choice if modern DTS audio formats are desired.

Cheers!
