Audio problems with Plex

I have ripped movies (MP4) that play fine, with loud volume and stereo, using VLC media player. But when played through Plex, for example on my Windows 10 SurfaceBook or Samsung Galaxy S6–regardless whether synced or direct streaming on my home network–I lost most volume and stereo; it only plays in one ear with any volume, and very faintly or not at all on the other side (or ear if using headphones). It must be Plex given that I do not have this problem playing the same media file with VLC. Please help! This is a real problem, and I want to love and use Plex. Thanks.
