Audio Stops Playing in MKV on Nvidia Shield

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2673
Player Version#: 7.31.0.16802

I’ve been trying to play MKV files remotely to an Nvidia Shield. Automatically adjust quality is turned on. If the conversion drops to 720 Kbps or below, the audio will usually stop playing and the video will continue. Sometimes the audio will return when the bitrate increases, but other times I must stop and resume playing to get audio to work again. This only happens in MKV files. MP4 files seem to work fine.

What sort of audio is the audio stream? (AAC, DTS, AC3 etc)

I’ve tried EAC3 5.1 and AC3 2.0.

Just tried remuxing video replacing EAC3 5.1 with AAC 5.1 and it did the same thing. Only seems to happen on Convert Automatically. Haven’t been able to get it to happen when using specific quality conversions.

OK thanks. I was trying specific ones myself and could not repro. Need to figure out a way to force automatic to lower it I guess.

Yes, that doesn’t seem to work properly if you start the video with Convert Automatically. I had to select a lower bitrate than the encoded rate, so I selected 4 Mbps. After it started playing I went back and selected Convert Automatically. Then I created interference on my phone so the bitrate conversion slowly dropped and around 2 Mbps to 720 Kbps the audio stops playing, but the video will continue in low resolution.
I did all this after my brother, who is using DSL, complained there was something wrong with my server because the audio kept stopping. He has a 15 Mbps connection and my upload speed on cable is 40 Mbps, so I don’t know why he wasn’t able to play the original 10 Mbps file at full bitrate.
I was able to duplicate his problems using my cell phone as a hotspot and blocking the signal enough to drop the bitrate to 720 Kbps and it would happen to me also. We both watch the videos with Subtitles enabled, but I don’t think that is the cause. However, there is a bug in Plex that forces transcoding of video on MKV files with subtitles enabled, even with external SRT subtitles.
