Audio track changes and playback crashes when opening the playback settings

Hi there,

after the last update of the Plex player for Windows (11), I experienced some problems with video playback.
The problem is that during playback, suddenly the language/audio track changes and when I want to change it back and click on the playback setting, the whole playback crashes (as seen in the screenshot below).

Does anyone know why my player is behaving like this and how I could fix this problem?

Server Version#: 1.29.2.6364
Player Version#: 1.58.1.3380-ea159c52

The logfile was saved directly after the error occured, you should see the same behavior around Nov 29, 2022 17:49:00 and maybe a few times in between.

That is the server log not the desktop player logs

Sorry, I confused the two. I updated the original post accordingly.

Are you saying that the audio track changes during playback and then you use the playback settings to changes it back during playback? Does this occur with other files or just this one?

Yes, the audio track changes during playback, which is why I tried to change it back (it makes no difference whether the playback is running or paused, the result is the same). The error also occurs with other files and I have not been able to find a specific “rule” so far, the track sometimes changes after 20-30 minutes, other times even every 10-20 seconds after I have restarted the playback (after it crashed).
Strangely, playback does not crash when I try to change the track normally (when it has not changed during playback).

This really sounds like something is wrong with the file. If you run one of the files through mkvmerge (to remux it), does the resulting file show the same problem?

I tried that, but unfortunately the behavior is still the same. At first I also thought that something might be wrong with the file(s), but since the problems occur with all files (including files that were played by Plex before without any problems), I think it must be some problem with the player.

Please post a sample file that reproduces the issue, along with client logs of the issue being reproduced with the sample.

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem.
But if I click on the “shuffle button” for example, when it happens, it comes back to the original language. It’s really weird.

This problem is new. I would think it’s related to a +/- recent update of the player.

Edit : I’m on Windows 10, player version Version 1.58.1.3380-ea159c52 and server Version 1.29.2.6364.

Here is a sample with the timestamp where the error occurred. (Though I don’t think the problem is the file as the errors occur randomly, if you play the sequence again, it works perfectly.)

Client log file (first error occurs around Dec 06, 2022 15:30:00):
Plex.log (1.4 MB)

Strangely, as described by HOTE_tv in the previous post, you can temporarily fix the problem by clicking the shuffle button (also included in the logfile)

Hi,

I have the exact problem and I can confirm it comes from a recent update of the player. Nothing changes on my side and never got this problem before.

Hi,

I have exactly the the same problem too with the windows player on windows 10.
It occurs with many different files and with different types (AC3, EAC3, DTS, DTS-HDMA, …).
I tried to disable the passthough, but it still happens. It seems to occur randomly.
But impossible to watch a movie or a TV show in english for me, it bring back the french audio after a few minutes watching. (my windows, plex server and player is set up in french.

The logs provided by @arvidjonas do indicate the audio track being changed but not the initial cause of it. There are some unusual circumstances around the time where this occurred but it’s not clear if this is related or not. So could others post clients logs when this occurs for them along with the approximate wall-clock time of when it happened (as @arvidjonas did).

I don’t have audio track changes, but I definitely am seeing these same issues with subs turning themselves off, and Plex sometimes crashing when I turn them back on. It is definitely recent.

Dec 07, 21:00 - Started watching ~45 minute tv show. Subs kept turning themselves off about every 5-10 minutes, but I could turn them back on with no problem.

Dec 07, 22:48 - Started watching a movie. Subs couldn’t be found (this is also a recent issue?) and I uploaded a file. I only watched half of the movie (because of the crashing) and during that 45 minutes or so, the subs kept turning themselves off and Plex crashed with this same error at least twice when I tried to turn the subs back on.

Log attached, but LMK if I need to provide something else.

Windows player version: 1.58.1.3380-ea159c52
Plex Server version: 1.29.2.6364
Plex.3.log (10.1 MB)
Plex.2.log (6.9 MB)

EDIT: Corrected logs.

Those are server logs, not client logs.

sorry; uploaded correct files.

No longer of use, I deleted my logs.
And that’s my logs.
At 00:52 the problem occurs (language switching) and I “corrected” it by clicking the “shuffle button” then it happens again at 00:55 and I clicked on the setting button to show you (also) the error.

Same problem on Mac-Player-Client: I do experience the same problem.
Mac-Client on iMac, Version 1.59.1.3398-dab42972
Language: German
prefered language for movies: original (with sub, if language other than EN)
Data stored on Synology-NAS - latest Plex-server-software. (local connection via LAN)

Please let me know if you need lock-files or other data to solve the problem.

The time 00:52 is not in this log file; it starts at 02:49. Your settings for the logging level is far too verbose to really be of use so turn it down.

I did ask for others to post their logs along with the wall-clock time of when it occurred.

hi, i also have the same problem, however, disabling “use Hardware decoding” in the player settings seems to solve the issue
