Auto Play is off, and yet Plex Auto Plays TV Episodes under 5 min in length

Server Version: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version: PMP 2.58.0.1076
Player Version: Android 8.4.2.19372
Client OS: Windows 10 2004 - HP Desktop PC
Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
Sony 7.1 AV Receiver

I have always chosen to disable Auto Play within my players, and this still works perfectly for all TV episodes, except for Specials (S00).

I know this has certainly not always been the case, and I couldn’t really say when this problem started, however now when I play any TV special, it Auto Plays on to the next episode directly afterwards. No delay, no messages, just Auto Plays.

I have tried this within PMP on 2 different computers, and is also the case on my Android mobile.

I can confirm that there is no problem when playing regular TV episodes, eg: S01 or S02 etc.

I have looked around the forum and it appears that a number of other people have reported various issues with Auto Play over the last few weeks or so, although none with this specific issue…

Thanks,

Andy.

From personal experience my guess is it’s not so much related to specials but any episode below a certain duration (never bothered to check the exact duration).

Edit: I’ll ask around if this is a known issue

Now that’s quite possible. So far the few I’ve tried have been from 59 seconds to 4 minutes. I’ll check out a few others a little later and will let you know. Thanks…

Seems to happen for videos that are shorter than 5 minutes.
I’ve run into this issue for a video that’s 4:50 minutes long. For a 5:40 minute long video it “properly stopped” after the episode (showing the post-play screen instead).

Side note… not sure this is actually an issue with auto-play. When auto-play kicks in, you’ll still see the post-play screen and a count-down to the next episode. With those short videos, the next video plays pretty much immediately.

If you can get to the player OSD in time - see what the state is of Auto-Play in the OSD.

I do recall having to click that off - I wonder if it says it’s off, but it’s lying…lol

I’ve just managed to find a few episodes both under and over 5 minutes, and you are right. Any TV episode over 5 minutes stops at the end as expected, and any episode under 5 minutes seems to roll over to the next episode.

I’m gonna rename the post so it’s more appropriate…

Where do I find this? If I press the letter i on my keyboard, that brings up loads of info but nothing that shows Auto Play state…

Or if I select this on the tool bar…

I get this…

While the item is playing - hit the Settings Icon.
I just found mine on - again - so I turned it back off.

You will find this on Plexweb/PMP/PfW - probably not on Android Mobile.

Thanks @JuiceWSA

So it now turns out that specific interface is only present in PMP when in Desktop mode, and not in TV mode, and indeed doesn’t exist on Android Mobile.

Desktop Mode:

TV Mode:

And of course, when I untick the Auto Play tick box in Desktop mode, it is unfortunately still ignored for any episode under 5 minutes long.

So I think that @tom80H is right when he said…

Curiously, I have just tested this in both Plex Web local and plex.tv and it also happens there, so it appears that it could be across the board.

I guess this could definitely be considered a bug, albeit not a showstopper.

Question is though, will it get onto the bug list?

Thanks both for your input on this

PMP has a specific Tick Box for Autoplay in the settings - and updates do not change it.

Apparently every update turns on Autoplay for the clients with the switch shown above - so… you’ll have to keep changing it back.

Also apparently it won’t matter for shorties.

Some first feedback. It appears what we experience is actually in line with the current design… so it’s not so much a bug.

That being said… doesn’t need to mean the design is right and there shouldn’t be an option to reconsider it for this specific use case.

Well found Tom, and I agree that although this is by design, I’m not sure it was fully thought through…

I have found that when playing TV specials for example, when the last 2 specials are both under 5 minutes, it then “Auto-Advances” onto S01E01 when you are currently up to date on the regular seasons.

I think there should be a consideration when playing TV series, or at the very least, adhere to the Auto Play option being disabled within the client.

These are their considerations, and I certainly do understand them…

I predict this will be a topic of hot conversation:

… many of those episodes are hovering right around the Event Horizon, with that last one poised to inject you into OCD Orbit. <— those guys need a kick-starter, so they can afford a little more film in the camera.

Fun times…lol

LOL…

Indeed, that would end up making me frown if that happened frequently enough!

I do think there should be an ability to prevent “Auto anything”, maybe at library level, or simply adhere to the client setting when Auto-Play is disabled.

An Option?
Shirley, you jest?

Yes, I predict to hear more about this:

I’ve got a half dozen headed this way at high speed from:

This Collection is in a growth trend:

I’m not gonna be happy about that lack of ‘Options’… that much is certain…

Oh we’ve opened a can of worms here!

Worms turned to Snakes:

This is definitely something that needs to be addressed. If I turn off Auto-play, I expect it to be off regardless of the length of the video. My kid was watching a video and he was told it was the last one. Due to Plex’s auto-play rules for videos under 5 minutes, he wound up watching several more episodes than he was supposed to. On top of which, this is just obnoxious.
