Auto-Resume Options

Auto-resume is a great feature, but I find it an annoyance at times. Is there a possibility of adding an additional option to auto-resume so that the user would have the following choices?

  1. Auto-resume - On
  2. Auto-resume - Off
  3. Auto-resume - Ask (where a dialogue box is presented with something like “Would you like to resume from last played position?” with two options, “Yes” (action=resumes from last position) and “No” (action=plays from the beginning of the file).

Yeah, that’s a great exposition of how it should work. Please file a Trac feature request, and thank you!

Nice idea. Agreed that the interface needs some work in this regard.

How about a dialog that pops up as it starts playing (skinner placing it wherever) that goes away after 5-10 seconds or so of no activity? That way it would work without an option being necessary. A simple dialog with an actively focused button might be an option with “Click here to resume from where you left off”.

Alternatively, the “movie information” dialog could be re-jigged on to the default select action with less information being shown, and a play, resume, button being available (effectively a contextual menu with extra info about the movie on it). It’s an extra click whenever you play a movie though.

Lastly, one could use resume as the default action always, and have a button on the OSD for “start over”, or utilize the “press stop twice to reset” technique that some dvd players use.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Ticket opened - #308: Expanded Auto-Resume Options

I agree with Jonathan, We should just integrate an option just like front row, not make another damn setting. When you start a movie it should ask if you wanna start from last place or start over (resume being the default selected). We could add a advanced settings key to change behavior for the few who don’t like it…

So, remove the current option and just have the behaviour set out in option 3 of my ticket as an integrated feature? Absolutely. But, that is my ego speaking. I believe that Plex should be highly configurable, and where possible, configurable through the GUI so I think three states for this feature option instead of two is not that bad.

if we’re talking database, could a feature be added that stores whats been watched data ?

e.g. in a list of files (say a series with 22 episodes) what’s been watched is highlighted a different colour to what hasn’t.

Already a feature. Watched items show a large tick on the poster in library mode.

this doesn't work in Aeon, right?

Right. Aeon seems to just hide all played items.

It never hides an item here.
Do you have to set a setting for hiding watched items?

I always have all the tv shows in my library, when I watched an episode, it won't go away.

When I tired it out a couple of days ago it wouldn’t show any played items for me!!! Alpha software is the excuse I guess.

I don’t use library mode  just list mode

if you switch to pmiii and change the option so it hides all watched videos and then switch back to aeon they will be hidden, there just isnt a button to change the behaviour in aeon yet

As for the resume thing, I have plex set to not auto resume and if I want to resume I just hit ‘c’ and pick resume from the menu. A 5 second pause every time i want to watch something or an extra button click seems a bit redundant. my pvr (V+) does the same thing with recorded content, it’s a pain in the proverbials. The only thing I would do to improve the current functionality would be to move the menu option to the top so it’s the first option, then I wouldn’t have to hit ‘down’ a couple of times to get to it.

I agree, please bring this feature soon, I’m missing it dearly. I would change the wording though to this:

  1. Auto-resume - Always
  2. Auto-resume - Never
  3. Auto-resume - Ask

And about which setting should be default, I vote for 3 “Ask”

Apple’s DVD player has it, AppleTV has it, Media Portal has it. So I think it’s safe to choose it as a default

It’ll be the best setting, new users will go “Oh nice, this thing is smart”

Bump, I hope this feature request hasn’t been forgotten… every time I use Media Portal I’m reminded how sucky Plex/XBMC is in this regard :stuck_out_tongue:

It has not been forgotten, it has been implemented in the latest version that I have been testing: 0.5.18. I would like to add to this request as it has definitely gone in the right direction but I feel can be improved further by allowing an "overlap time".

By this I mean, lets say you exit the movie you are watching at 00:45:38 (HH:MM:SS), and you set the "overlap resume" time to "-30", and you answered yes to resume, Plex could resume playing this movie at 00:45:08 (00:45:38-00:00:30=00:45:08).

I find when I resume to the exact same second in the movie, I loose the sense of where I left off. A feature like this one can quickly put the viewer back into the movie :-)

I thank you guys in advance for consideration!

It seems to me that resume doesnt work when playing rared movies. Any chance this could be implemented?

Works perfekt for unpacked ones tho.

Thats actually a cool idea, it's hard to IMMEDIATELY pick up where you left off, and a quick 30 refresher might be good...

Is it possible to change the Resume Menu so that “Resume From xx:xx” is top of the list. I often get carried away starting up a movie again and hit the button too quickly which starts the movie from the beginning and so forgets the resume time. At least if the options were the other way round and you did want to start from the beginning you could back out and press play again, this way you do not get that second chance.

Thanks.
