Server Version#: All Current
Player Version#: All Current (that I know of)
It used to be that all the players I used had many settings including a specific max 1080p setting and some 4K settings. Now it appears there is a 720p at 4 MB (and lower settings) and the next step up is 4k (Internet/remote streaming quality, on PS5 and FireStick and Samsung anyway). I have a LOT of movies in both 4K HDR and in 1080p SDR. I spent years curating my library by the recommendation of having multiple versions with the 1080p and 4k in the name, and the movies in the same folder. Many of my friends do not have a 4K HDR TV. It USED to be easy for the Plex clients to request 1080p and not 4k - I’d have them set their player to the MAXIMUM 1080p setting and the Plex server would send the 4K only if the setting was on 4k and not 1080p. This auto selection was great, and no one had to worry about what they chose. But gradually you have gotten rid of the 1080p option in many of the players settings. You have added auto detect. You have added all sorts of things to pick bandwidth, but what you are doing instead is stressing my server that needs to transcode MULTIPLE 4K streams down. PLEASE give us a way for you to set in the players that you want the 1080p and lower versions, and not have Plex continuously choose my 4k HDR versions that it then converts to 1080 or lower. It should at least try to transcode the 1080p BEFORE the 4k. We should NOT have to choose Play version and some such things. If we set in our player that we want 1080p, we should be able to GET the 1080p if available. Please give us this back across the platforms.
