Whenever a movie is added to Plex it consistently chooses the wrong metadata if this is an older movie and a newer movie exists. For example if you have the 1950s Disney Cinderella then it will automatch to the newer live action version every time. The only option you have is to fix the match.
The suggestion for Plex files on a NAS is to name the movie file as Title (year). I do that and it works for movies that don’t have a “newer” version. But for movies with a newer version it seems to ignore the year and use the newest movie instead.
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
Then perform the Plex Dance with movies which were previously matched wrong by default.
The movies are mp4 but there is a single movie per folder so I’m not sure why the Local Media Assets would impact anything. There is no problems (in general) with the match for movies that have a single version. It just seems to match to the newer version over the older version even though the release year is in the movie title as recommended by Plex.
Nevertheless I’ll switch it like you said. At this point though I’ve migrated all my movies so I’ll have to wait until I get a new one to see if it resolves the issue.
Simply because if the mp4 files have an embedded ‘Title’ meta tag, which has the movie title without the year as its content, Plex will use this title to match the movie. And if it has no (year), Plex will default to the newer movie.
