Automatic Library Scan Hangs after Server Update

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version#: NA

I made the mistake of upgrading the Server from v. 1.14.1.5488 to v. 1.19.5.3112. After the update, the Automatic Library Scan keeps Hanging.

If I cancel the scan and do a manual scan, it works fine.
Here are my settings:

Any idea on how to troubleshot this? I tried to look in the logs, but I have no idea what to look for.

Note that I didn’t have this issue before the Server update, and my library has not changed.

From the logs you sent me (collected at Aug 31, 2020 19:13:) appears to be a hung scanner process - that hung after Aug 30, 2020 16:58:14)

I responded in the original forum thread. I will replicate here

The scan that got stuck near the end was for the “TV Shows” Library

Appears to get to 100% but then at the end discovered that the show “I Am the Night” had some unrefreshed media
I suspect that there was still a Plex Media Scanner.exe process stuck at that time - it was at Aug 30, 2020 16:58:14 when it appears to have hung.

Would need a process dump of the process if it gets stuck like this. Also you have excluded the agents log files from the zip you sent me - these log files would be in the “PMS Plugin Logs” subdirectory. I have not got any of these logs

So what i suggest is getting diagnostics for this with the latest version of Plex Media Server - as the logs I looked at were from 1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896

So upgrade to 1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9
Run with debug logging enabled

Next time you notice a stuck Plex Media Scanner.exe process where it gets stuck for hours - get the logs zip (all logs including PMS Plugin Logs directory) and create a process dump for the stuck Plex Media Scanner.exe process and upload zipped dmp file and send me link to it (eg dropbox/google drive etc) and also the zipped logs

How do I create a process dump for the stuck Plex Media Scanner.exe process?

Windows task manager
View detail
Find Plex Media Scanner.exe process
Right click on process
Create dump

@sa2000,
I messaged you the logs and DMP file. Thank you again for your help!

I looked at the logs and the dmp file. Appears to be some timing issue with a request to the server from the scanner process is stuck (lost)

Is this running on Windows 7 ?

I am referring the issue to our development team - but it is important that you run on current versions of both the OS and Plex Media Server. The evidence I have is from PMS v1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896 running on Windows version: 6.1 (Build 7601) - which is either Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2

The TV Scanner is being re-written at the moment to be in-line in same way as music. photos, movies - so this would change the bahaviour and there will no longer be progress update requests between the scanner and the Plex Media Server - the type of request that got lost

I am using Windows 7 SP1 (64 bit). I currently need to run WIN7, so it is not possible to upgrade the OS.

The Library Scan never hung until I updated the Server and there were also other issues after the update. I am therefore reluctant to update the Server again, unless I know that the Scanner issue has been fixed.

How will I know which server version will have this updated?

It would be good to know when the issue came in with regards to Plex Media Servers versions.

May be the Windows Application Event log goes back enough to the time when this started. To find out what versions were installed when, you can filter the Application Event Log

I have not used windows 7 for a long time - and i cannot remember if the following is the same on windows 7:

Start / Run: eventvwr.exe
Select Windows Logs and then Application
Click on Filter Current Log
Click on drop-down for Event Source
Scroll through and tick MsiInstaller
Click away from the drow down
and click ok

Best then to export the filtered log to excel using
Save Filtered Log File as
and selecting save as Type: Text (tab delimited) (*.txt) option

Then you can data / get csv/txt into excel and filter on Plex and see if you can establish between what 2 versions the problem started

On the top of this post I specified what I upgraded from:

That is a big jump in version numbers and there were close to 2000 code file changes and it would be a mammoth task to establish which change brought the problem on

As I have not seen this issue elsewhere and since 1.19.5.3112 is now a very old release and was only around for 1 day (July 21) and was superseded on july 22 by 1.20.0.3125, my recommendation is that you bring your server to the current release and if the problem is not resolved then we investigate

The current release is beta 1.20.3.3430-48c594b30

I am sorry but it would be wrong to spend time on an issue in a release that had minimal exposure and is way out of date now

@viking2

Any feedback on this when trying later versions of Plex Media Server ?

As mentioned before, the version that exhibited this issue was only around for 1 day and I suspect the bug was fixed after that

Thank you for following up on this.

I have not updated yet. I had so many issues last time that I updated, so I need to make sure that I have several hours free to troubleshoot in case it goes wrong again. I will try to find a day “soon” when I will be able to do this.

At the moment, I have turned off the hourly library scan.

I can actually confirm this is happening to me. It is nonstop. I have to shut down the plexserver.exe and restart the service. It gets to the end of scan on my j: drive and just hangs at the last file. I have logs if needed. This has only started to happen recently and I have been running Plex for over 4 years.

I had suspected at first a bad drive so I purchased a brand new one and cloned the drive which did not resolve the problem.

If I delete the file it hangs on, such as Bug’s Life, it just hangs on a different one, like 21 Jump Street.

If more info is needed I can generate a new thread or discuss in pm or you can remote in as well to investigate further. I am wide open to help!!

Also I am fully updated to most recent version of Windows 10, running on m2 with 48gb of RAM and most updated version of Plex beta.

Would need to see logs please. If you can get them in today i will have a look today - otherwise will be next week
