Automatic library update on network share?

Any news on this?

I’m running a setup with a split up library and server. I’ve found a solution with updating library via url that can be done from my phone but it’s a suboptimal solution. What I want is automatic update from a network shared library.

Could anyone point me in the right direction? My google skills can’t find anything relevant.

you could go with a scheduled update.
Settings > Server > Library > Update my library periodically

yea… but doing a complete scan every 24hours would put my drives on a too big a strain wouldn’t it? My library is… big…

If you put files on your file server per script - the same script could call the URL to trigger the library update. Maybe with some added ‘smarts’ which prevent library updates if it was already triggered within the last n hours.

And too much strain - if your files are matched perfectly, Plex will mostly only read directories if there wasn’t any change in the file timestamps.

I see… I can’t code so not modding any scripts personally so that’s not possible…

So a library that’s several Tb big won’t ruin my hd to read through it once every 24 hours?
Then I guess the schedualed update is the way to go…

I found a way using “token” to update the whole library via http link… Any thoughts if there is a way to update just a specifik library… So if added music I can update only music library instead of all of them?

Sure, you just need to give the id number of your library
see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201638786-plex-media-server-url-commands/

You can also determine the id by inspecting the Plex XML info of an item in this library. The number appearing within librarySectionID="99" is what you need.

I do not know about other operating systems but under Windows 10 any addition to my library, which is on a network share, triggers a partial library update exactly as set in settings.

I have seen a lot of reports that this does not happen but on my systems, both my server on a Windows 10 computer and the one on a Shield TV, my Libraries update exactly as they should. I wish I could say what I am doing to make it happen but I have done nothing special except to make sure “Update my library automatically” and “Run a partial scan when changes are detected” are turned on.

It very depends on whether the file server is using a genuine Windows as its OS or if it is running on Linux with SAMBA.
In the latter case, automatic notifications about changed contents often do not work.

An advantage to Windows? Who knew!

There are so many perceived disadvantages that I thought that it was pretty much decided that Windows had nothing good about it.

That must be the reason why it is the predominant OS on the desktop.
