I see this was an issue last year, but I still have this issue in Jan 2020:
The libraries are not auto-updating episodes of a TV show, even after 20 minutes of the video file being on the hard disk. I have to manually “scan this library” for it to show up. Any ideas?
Mind sharing some more details on your setup?
Most importantly… are you talking about media on an internal or external drive (e.g. connected via USB or network).
The OS might not be able to recognize changes to an external file system and therefore not allow Plex to automatically trigger a scan of parts or the full library. Based on my experience, automatic scans only work reliably with internal disks…
Typically, the most desirable way to keep your libraries up to date is using the Update my library automatically feature. This uses capabilities of the operating system to detect when content has changed and then initiate a library scan.
Note : In most cases, this should work for content on local filesystems. It will generally not work for network shares mounted via SMB, NFS, AFP, or similar.
If you have this option enabled and library scans don’t happen automatically (you should wait 60 seconds after all activity on the drive finishes), automatic updates may not be supported on your operating system/filesystem and you may wish to use periodic updates instead.
Thank you. I’ll try that, putting files on Mac Mini’s internal disk but this is a big limitation if true. Anyway for now my external hard disk seems to work from time to time.
Researching your issue about auto scanning with using external drives as a content directory, I have a couple questions.
Are you using a USB hub? (Make sure the Hub is the same speed as the drive)
Is the USB cable the same speed as the Drive? (USB2 cable with USB2 Drive)
Is the USB drive self Powered? (Has a power cable)
What version Mac OS?
I’m aware that USB should be backward compatiable but it has been known to cause intermittent problems.
In the mean time try a different USB port on the Mac Mini and verify your External drive via Disk Utility/ First aid.
And Reset NVRAM
I have used External USB drives for years with little trouble including Directories for Plex media server. But saying that I have read in the past of some users having strange behavior.
